Someone has made some labeled wiring harnesses tailored for a standard buggy and is selling them on ebuy. He calls it, VW Dune buggy Wiring harness FINISHED! "Plug and play" . They look fairly good but an ATC fuse block would have been better.

It also seems like it is designed for a pretty stock VW system (ie: VW speedo). Might not be worth all the mods in case you wanted to run real gauges.
Still need a ground system as well. |

The picture threw me, I said it didn't have an ATC fuse block but reading down in the description I was wrong. It has a 6 circuit ATC/ATO type fuse block.
Reading the description, it sounds to be really well done. Believe it has grounds and a Tach wire at least.
The description says You get a finished plug and play VW dune buggy harness for:High beam, low beam, front and rear turn signals, horn, rear running lights, stop lights, reverse lights, reverse lead in, lisence plate light. Ignition switch, headlight switch, dimmer switch (floor mounted), wiper switch/ motor, turn signal switch, flasher, Tach, speedometer, high beam indicator, oil pressure indicator, Turn signal indicator, coil indicator and heavy accessory lead. Also starter and alternator leads. All with respective grounds for a fiber-glass bodied vw car. Also, a modern, sealed, 6 circuit Fuse box. ATC/ATO type. All with labels. No guessing anywhere. |

Seems awfully lean to have enough grounds. |

That's true but I always like to run the ground wire separate from the harness, it makes for shorter wire runs. In back I just run a wire from one of the screws on the fan shroud straight up to one light then across to the license light then to the other light, in series.
In front I run one wire from each shock towers up to each headlight and turn signal. I also run one wire from the left front shock tower through a hole in the body to the rear of the dash and the gas tank. |

I personally like them inside the passenger compartment and have one continuous wire per item back to one central grounding area.
Its much easier to chase gremlins and they are out of the elements. |

That is a nice looking harness, and having the ends already fixed saves time, expense getting them. But, wrapped up like that limits the custom options unless additional wires are run along with the harness, and what if your lights on the rear are unique and need a little bit more wire.
I build two ground spots in the system. One in the rear, and one in the front. Usually a stud welded to the chassis before painting. I do not like to run the ground from the rear to the front, (vice-versa), seems redundant when the entire chassis is a ground. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

If you read the description the guy has on eBay it sounds like he will work with you to make sure the harness will fit with the lights, etc. that you're using. Even extra length if necessary. The harnesses are custom made for each application. It looks fairly basic but could be good for a buggy. Maybe not quite as complete as needed for a kit car? |

Yes, that seems to be the market price point
A friend has ordered a plug and play one off ebay and also asked that it be set up for the turn lever mounted dimmer switch and relay instead of a floor mounted switch. Don't know what the answer was but looking forward to seeing it when he gets it. |

No mention of which grade wire he's using? And I'd prefer crimp instead of soldered connections...

I don't see how it would fit a personalized buggy.
The 1967 VW bug wiring diagram is so simple even a caveman could do it.
Just get some 100 ft rolls of different colored wire most of which can be 16 ga and build your own harness.
It is one way to get very intimate with your buggy build and you will learn a lot about how the wiring system works. _________________

i have been looking on ebay but have not found the posting of the Finished wiring harness, where on ebay can i find it, i am in the process of wiring my 1974 and have loads of diagrams but the seem to be contradictory of each other in many cases and do not show how to wire in the relays, do you run the wires to the fuse box first then on to the relay then the switches, sorry my first buggy build |

I plan to buy the long wheelbase version of this harness for $175. Has anyone on here bought one from this guy yet ?
I'm also starting to wire up a Model T touring hot rod with a flathead engine and 53 Merc overdrive trans. The trans will be one of the more complex wiring tasks, solenoids, governor, throttle switch, and a couple more things I'm trying not to think of.
Plug and play sounds good for my hopefully fast buggy resto . |
