Today was the revival of a long lost local show here in San Diego County. It was the first show that I took my 63 21,OOO Kilometer unrestored notchback too. Met Everett Barnes for the first time there.
The 2019 Familienfest held at the Deer Park Winery in Escondido CA. Perfect spot for a smaller VW show. Tucked in under the Oak trees.
I wasn't expecting any kind of awards and I walked away with a second-place in Campers, losing out to a Split window Westy. It was a judged award, how it should be and not peoples choice. A very pleasant surprise.

Wow! Thats amazing hardware at that gathering. Seamus would feel “inadequate” among them. He will have to stay up in the northeast to not be embarrassed. Nice job on the prize. Its good to have people acknowledge our efforts, even if we pretend like we dont really care. Cheers. _________________ You can't be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline. About a week or two before I went over to Garys, the bus started to make a rattle noise at certain RPM. Like low in second. Its become louder.
I think its something in the muffler? What do you think? Yes, Gary - this is that noise I heard that we didn't really explore.

Hard to say on crappy laptop speakers, could be lots of things, a different muffler is the easiest thing to try without digging in to the engine needlessly, I can't say it's not that, I've heard similar muffler noises in the past. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

My 2 cents?
The noise/rattle sounds external to the engine to me. Muffler, lose nut/washer bouncing around between the pulley and engine tin or between the engine tin somewhere else. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

First-person, sounds very tinny. Like a baffle inside the muffler?
I was worried it was lower end like pump or cam, but the noise is right under the muffler. I've already gone over this like 4 times routing out things. It did have a missing nut on one of the flanges to HE ports, fixed it, still there. _________________

Hate to say it, but it sounds very different from the exhaust rattles I've heard. I suppose it could be, but I'm not convinced it's related to the muffler. _________________ '78 Bus 2.0FI

Im going to check the valve lash to see if any have backed out. Other than that I may take the muffler off and bang on it with a soft blow hammer. Ive sent all this info to Vintage Speed as well - because if it is the muffler - its got a 5 year warranty.
Onto something else. With the front headlight washer system, the passenger side kick panel is gone and replaced with a water tank. this prompted me to remove the speakers and put them elsewhere. Since then the drive kick has been an orphaned half ass, duct taped deal that bugged me. So I ordered an ABS one and put it in.
Much, much cleaner. Time for a Coors Light.

I replaced the Formula V Mahogany shift knob with the GTI Kamei rubber ball knob. I forgot about these shift knobs until I saw a pic last week on an old GTI. Loved these when I was younger. Direct fit on the Bus shifter.

Cool. Waaay back when, I worked at a dealership where we had a black diesel dasher wagon that had that knob. I loved driving that thing. _________________ 1974 Thing - x-Acapulco

Stuart is down in SoCal for a hot minute. He swung by to get a burrito and help me figure out WTF the rattle was for sure on this bus. Well, it ended up being the muffler for sure.
So we played musical mufflers. Off came the Vintage Speed one, on went the stock one from the 74. That was done so I could drive the 77 again without the irritation.
So now the 77 has a real OEM stock muffler. What a trip

Lots of folks thought I was nuts to think it as well. In all fairness, it's hard to hear from a vid sometimes. There is a tactile portion to it all I think. Even Stuart thought it was drivetrain/valves before he listened again.
Big thanks to Stu for swapping this shit out yesterday. It was good to see the spaz and hang out. I was planning to do this but it would have taken me the day to do it.

I do have to say there is a lot to be said about the stock muffler set up. You get used to the Rock Star loud Sports Car noise, its a pleasant surprise to appreciate the finer things in life. Like quiet.
I drove the bus to work today. Wow.

My 1970 had a header and a single muffler when I bought it. When I installed a stock muffler back on it, I also was shocked with how much quieter the bus was driving it. I was very happy. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]
