Lets see if we can clear up something. For the people that refer to there cars bugs, buses, etc. as (HE) I.E "I don't want to sell him" "He was a great bus".

Well me myself think that every car, boat etc should be refereed to as (SHE) I.E "I hate to sell her", "She was a great bus".

The reason they should be named or call after a woman is Ships, cars and women are "containers" that carry a load in themselves and finally deliver it.

Also ships and mothers secure the life of the load. The load is viewed as something precious.

This is how I see it just my piece of mind.

Let me know what you think.

I refer to my bug as he, as in his name is Luwie. We refer to machines as "he" or "she" because we make an emotional conection to our machines. It's easy to call them female names because most men want to take care of a female. Until I got my bug I would have agreed with you they should all be female. I really can't explain why, but when a machine needs a male name you just know. Then rather than your wife getting mad you spend all your time with that "other women". She calls your car the "best friend". Very Happy

Interesting, I just thought that ships were "she" because sailor's would leave port for years at a time with no female in sight and they would grasp at anything that would make them think of the "she" they left behind.

If the she thing is true, the US Navy has some serious renaming of vessels to undertake!

She / He / whatever, just enjoy the ride and don't worry about such sexual underpinnings.

It's an IT... it's just a car.

Giving you're car a name and personality is just weird.

"most" of the people I know will reciprocate by putting a knife in your back. If your going to remove yourself from humanity I agree. If it's just a hobby and your having fun with it, I can't agree. I think the problem we have today is everyone is so worried about what someone else might think they've shoved their sence of humor up where the sun doesn't shine. Life's short

Bay window folks get a pass on this one, the naming of their bus is existential, and usually involves recreational pursuits of a chemical nature, not to be confused with misplaced emotional needs.

I agree with Glenn . If you care to name or "Sex" your car, keep it to yourself .
Especially when people refer to it by name and you have no idea ,they are talking about a car .
The only name I could go with or agree for a car would be " Bitch" .

One has to examine the cultural background.

Not all ships are "she." Russians refer to their ships in the masculine and I'm sure that others do as well.

Also, do drivers really think of their vehicles as containers to carry things? Most of the ones I see seem to think of their vehicles as projectiles, penetrating traffic as quickly as possible. Definitely a masculine function.

None of my cars have names but it doesn't bother me if other people's cars do.

They refer to the homeland a "Mother Russia" while Germans refer to it as the Fatherland.

Machines are not gender specific. providing a gender to an inanimate object is harmless, an extension of the emotional side of your ego, placed into play by the amount of time youve spent on the object. Confusion occurs when the reliability of the object becomes a sense of trust, and you neglect more important aspects of your life to spend time with He/her....to avoid this pitfall avoid having a "relationship" with your car.Enjoy it for what it is,a mechanical device different than other devices in its class, where improvement to design was made by engineering, not a sales or styling dept...

couldn't agree more.... although, I've had some colorful "names" for my cars over the years... usually when something goes wrong... Laughing

FTR, my sedan is "the bug", my coupe is "the ghia"... I do allow my children to name my cars to their liking so they can diferentiate between them... they have named my sedan "the grey bug", my coupe "the green ghia", and my workvan is "big white"....
