|
|
So here's the deal:
If you're not familiar with SoCal Bajas, we're an off-road group of dirty dudes who love VW's, based (where else?) here in Southern California. Every month, we go on a run, usually one day only, somewhere either locally, or not-so-locally. It's a fun group of guys for the most part, but we invite mgirdner to come along, too.
Anyway....
Traditionally, our biggest run of the year is in Big Bear in July. We head up to get out of the sweltering heat, and enjoy a full day running the trails up through beautiful forests and historical areas. Usually, we have 20-25 cars along up there of all different kings: Bajas, Things, Manxes, Rails, Class 11's, Type 3's... basically anything that's off-road-able. This run is a particularly well-suited run for "first timers" and beginning drivers. It's a family-oriented environment, so bring your kids, wives, and dogs, if you want. On our runs, we don't allow drinking, for the safety of all people participating. After the driving is over, we'll all get together at a local restaurant and then you can have margaritas until your heart's content!
As far as the run goes, there will be lots of dirt driving. We'll explore some of the old "Gold Country", as well as some ghost towns, mines, bat sanctuaries, and generally beautiful scenery. For the kids, we'll usually do at least one or two geo-caches. We'll also do a little technical stuff, nothing harder than can be done in a stock vehicle, but it will stretch your driving ability just enough to make it a fun time. There'll be lots of great memories made, and if this sounds like something you'd like to try some time, this is the one to go on.
We'll probably do a "Day 2" run for those interested in a few hour trip on Sunday morning, too.
Many folks will be camping in tents and RV's. We'll get info up on that soon. Others will be staying at the Best Western Chateau Big Bear City. Normally, rates are $165 per night, but we've arranged a few rooms for those interested for $75 per night! Get them fast, though. They're almost sold out. Make sure you tell them you're with SoCal Bajas to get that special group rate. Toll Free Reservations: 800-232-7466.
Meeting time and place: 7:00 AM in the Vons parking lot in Big Bear City, right in front of Starbucks.
Please cut and paste your name if you're going to make it, and add yourself to the list. We'd love to see you there!

This was a great ride last year, and I expect it to be just as great this year.
I will be back from my cross country Thing trip and will be ready with my new big back tires.
I have a room reserved and will be coming dpown from the Bay Area with at least one other off-roader.

We'll be camping at Serrano that weekend......now I'm tempted to bring my rail. Not a big fan of driving the RV up (or down) the hill without a trailer though.
I didn't know anything around there (except toward Crab flats) was OHV trails. |

Ther are 600 miles of trails on the BLM land in the Big Bear/Lake Arrowhead area. Easy to put togethera 100 mile run. |

For the people doing a day run (Sat only) where are you parking the tow vehicles?
Sounds like a fun run. |

Umm... Big Bear?!
We started out at the north east end of the lake, and headed through Holcomb Valley. We ended up near Crab Flats by the afternoon with several stops on the way. It was somewhere in between... _________________ "It's not complicated, it's just expensive!"

Sounds like a fun run. |
We meet up at the Von's parking lot at 8am on Saturday morning. There's plenty of parking in and around their lot. |

I really couldn't pin point exactly where it was up there...
Anyone else interested in a really fun run up in the mountains? A lot of cool trails and sights on this one... _________________ "It's not complicated, it's just expensive!"

This will be my first Big Bear trip. I am really looking forward to it. This is a really cool club, we have everything from stock Bajas to wild crazy offroad cars. Taking the whole family. |

I'm going without the misfitmobile (still workin on it and hitchin a ride with 57baja)
I'm car camping at Holcomb Valley Scout Camp. Getting there Friday afternoon (early) to relax for a while. Then hook up with the club Friday evening probably for a bit.
Holcomb is a really nice camp ground, small with only pit facilities, but still reall nice a quite. I need to get away from the city for the weekend!!!
