I was just wondering if anyone here has added an electronic or piezo igniter to light their stove burners.

I was just looking at this last weekend! I saw an electric ignitor kit for a BBQ at the hardware store, only $17. I'll post some pics if I go ahead with it. _________________ 1986 Vanagon Westfalia EJ25

Thanks guys,
I've seen the Coleman & a Webber replacement igniter.
Looks like it would be a fairly simple mod, but I was hoping to see some photos from folks of igniter, switch or plunger placement etc. before I actually started drilling holes. _________________ 83.5 Westy Waterboxer

Not to be a broken record, but "Use the Search." Just in the last week or two this very topic came up also:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=415233
Just search on: ignitor. SIMPLE!
(Ya, ya, I know, sometimes, rarely, I need some spoon feeding, but, in general it is far far faster to search a bit then to wait days on responses....) _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

r39o,
Like purplepeopleeater said, (and I saw it) that thread had to do with the fridge ignither.
What I was wondering was if anyone had installed igniters for their stoves.
Seems like it would be a medium-easy, non-essential, but convenient upgrade.

Sounds like a non-essential, though cool and convenient mod to add. Being that I hail from the "equal parts charcoal and lighter fluid to start the BBQ" crowd, how would a gizmo like this look? How would you wire it up? Found a few you-tubes of 9V battery igniters, but that seems a bit hokey to me. Give me 12v or nothin'! _________________ '85 Westy |

I suggest one of these, a modern day flint and steel:
Light My Fire Firesteel Scout
http://www.rei.com/product/737335
- Never dies due to lack of fuel
- No moving parts
- Works when wet
- Lasts far longer than a long butane / propane lighter
I use them for the van and for backpacking stoves, highly recommended.
Back to the original topic, yes, you could add some sort of striker, but with something like this for $12, why bother?

Uh, well because Coghlan's 503A Lantern Lighter is $2.99 and the Weber 7510 Igniter Kit is $10.99 maybe _________________ 83.5 Westy Waterboxer

I just use a little piezoelectric igniter that I bought ages ago from CampMor, notably, this one:
http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___23061
No flints, no fuel, I can usually light both burners with the first or second click. I couldn't manage to light the Coleman Black Cat heater with it, but that's a very different system and a special case.

This is the unit I was thinking of. It uses an AA battery - 12V is ideal but those units are expensive.

I have wanted to do the same thing for a while, but I'm hesitant to drilla hole(s) in the stainless steel of the stove under/by the burner as I don't want it to leak water when I use the stove grate for a drying rack after my meal.
JB weld is supposed to be good to 600* F. I assume that the white ceramic bit of the ignitor doesn't conduct heat all that well so where it passed through the stovetop would most likely not hit 600*+ and hopefully JB would stick to it well.
The sparkers are pretty cool, I just don't like having another thing to getout/put away, fall off the counter, rattle around, etc... _________________

I did this in mine, with (I'm pretty sure) that exact kit. It works great.
It doesn't leak if you drill the holes cleanly and put a small dab of high-temp RTV around the ignitors.
I put the ignition button through the stove faceplate on the far left. The AA cell is replaced from the front by unscrewing the rubber and plastic button, so you won't have to take apart the stove when the cell dies. I did this two years ago, and it's still on the first AA cell, so cell longevity is not really a big deal.
This mod is a bit of a PITA because there's not a lot of room to work inside the stove, but it is oh, SO worth it. No more digging for matches/lighters/flint and tinder

My first thought was to adapt an old fridge igniter for the purpose.
You know, to keep it stock! Kind of. |
