This is probably a dumb question. I browsed through and didn't find the answer.
Was it possible to build a Sportster as a kit, from a set of plans? |
Smart answer - yes. A number of them were built from plans.

Thanks. I'll dig around for more information. I have a good pan with a bad body, and a set of sprintstars. |

Empi Sportster barn find ... sitting on April-May 1963 pan ... it’s been through a few owners so roll bar has been added and rear floor was cut along with battery box no longer in correct location...now the question is ? Is it the real deal? Everything appears to be correct but no vin tag on pan tunnel ... you can see where the old rivets were for a tag ... also has a number tag welded to the front cowl? Anyone else have a welded number tag on there Sportster?

That looks really clean, it almost looks like it could have been made by factory. The only thing I see is the supports to roll bar.
Keep us up to date with the project.

Hello everyone.
I hope you are all doing well. Turkey day has past and looking forward to new Empi Sportster updates. I myself will be doing some electrical work, temporary rust prevention painting, doing some preventative maintenance. Next year going to strip the buggy for a much needed overhaul. This will include brakes and some modification to doors.
Let me know some of your ideas.
Don't forget to upload new images.
All best

I bought myself a Christmas present this year, but I'm not sure what it is. It looks similar to an Empi Sportster, but its slightly different, so I'm not sure. If anybody can identify I would appreciate it. It looks too well built to be a home build, but it could be. It sat abandoned in a briar patch for the last 12 years, this is how I got it, missing parts and wheels, drums all rusted stuck. The engine is stuck, probably from rust, not sure if its salvageable, but I hope to get this driving by next summer. I have 3 of the drums loose since, still working on the left rear, I may have to cut the axle nut to get the drum off. My intent is use this around my two acres as sort of a side-x-side, note the pick-up like bed. Its on a shortened pan, most of the body is pop riveted aluminum sheet over a square tube steel frame. Although all of the lights are missing, the mounts are still there, it looks like it was probably street legal at on time. |

Keep in mind that the EMPI Sportster was sold in several manners.
1. Complete turnkey factory built
2. Partly factory made, to be finished by customer.
3. Customer made from plans
4. Imitation made by owner to copy the EMPI Sportster. _________________ Richard

I happened across this Sportster for sale here on Samba about a year and a half ago, and I purchased it mostly for the engine, to use in another dune buggy project I'm working on. When first inquiring about it, I discovered this was a Sportster that Gene Berg and his son Clyde started building, but Gene died before it was completed, and his wife stored it for 30 years at their shop. The man I bought it from had been employed at their shop in the '80s and knew the Bergs, so Dee sold it to him about 5 years ago. I did a very little bit of minor work on it, and it is something like 75-80% completed, but I have decided that my priority is to complete my Manx buggy, so I will be selling this Sportster here on TheSamba. I do have a couple questions about it, which I'd like to get some input on from others here. I know that Sportsters were available in the different levels of completion, so what I'm hoping is that someone here might be able to tell something from the pictures about its production. The welds that are all over the place (see the last pic) and not yet ground smooth indicate it was fabricated to some extent, but I would think not by factory, but did the Berg's do all this welding, or how much of that was required when the kit was built? Purchased from factory in kit form, or built from plans? Thanks in advance!

It’s on a ‘63 pan. The tranny is a ‘67, (long axle). _________________ ---------------------------------

Just wanted to thank this forum for all of the great knowledge
that has been distributed here. Due to my maturity and limited abilities; I have posted my Sportster for sale. I attempted this once before as the covid started; and then I pulled it from the market.
Thank You TheSamba for being here. You are most important to the
VW community!
Proud to say I will still be lurking on the Ghia Forum.

I posted some photos and a question or two just a couple months ago (see about 5 or 6 posts up) about a Sportster project I would soon be selling. Just wanted folks to know that as of today, it is now up for sale here on Samba, as well as S.F. Bay Area Craigslist. Thanks!
