Tip:

I went to a cheap crappy place (alright it was Harbor Freight) and bought a pair of long needle nose pliers that have a 90º bend to them to assist me in removing the push rod tubes without dinging them. You can actually rest the "bend" of the pliers along the case to give you more leverage when needed.

Also make a note on just how the wire push rod tube retainer spring is installed on the rocker arms and how it should be applying pressure to the tube to keep it snug agains the engine case in operation.

I couldn't stand the suspense. Even though the new O-rings haven't arrived, I decided to get a head start and remove the existing pushrod tubes. Thankfully, all the pieces and parts appear to be in good shape. The tubes are not dented and the pushrods themselves are nice and straight. I even pulled out the lifters to have a quick look-see. All looks normal. That said, the O-rings (seals) at the head end looked AWFUL (see pics). So glad I decided to do this. And so far, thanks to all the good tutorials here, it's been a pretty easy job. I agree with someone who wrote that removing the wheel would be easier, but I don't think I'd get that time back. Wheel stayed on.

Total time so far, which included cleaning all the parts: ~60 mins.

Someone just forced your tubes in without making sure that the o-rings didn't get pinched and cut. Rounding off the sharp edge in the head, lubing the o-rings, and using a twisting motion as you install the tubes will all help to minimize the chance of an o-ring getting pinched. Watch the o-rings carefully as you do the install, sometimes it helps to move the tube up and down a bit and side to side to walk the o-ring in.

I sure hope you didn't mix up the lifters Confused

I'm in the minimal sealant camp myself, I do make an effort to polish the bores so they are smooth and shiny, if I get one that just won't behave with motor oil or grease on the rings a little Curil (the green non hardening stuff) always fixes it but usually oil and a shiny bore is quite enough.

Nope. I rotated them, just like radial tires.

You do not want to seal the O-rings.
Do to expansion and contraction. They need to be able to move in the pushrod tube bore.
Lubricating them is the correct installation method and allows the o-ring to move ever so slightly in its bore.
I would not be opposed to sealing the pushrod tube bore from the outside after they are installed. Reason being to keep road grime from collecting in the pushrod bore and migrating to the the pushrod o-ring. The road grime acts as sandpaper on the o-rings.

I will come back to this.

The superlube products ars superb.

To clarify a little...the pushrods do not move in the HEAD bores. That is what the spring clip is designed to do. They keep the PR tubes up against the lip on the inner side.

However....the inner ends of the tubes.....the case tubes.....are designed to move. As the engine expands. ...you could say the heads move away from the case.

This is why the inner end of the PR tube has that double wide seal area for a single wide o-ring. This is so that as the heads moves away from the case....with the head end held tight.....the inner end of the PR tube slips in and out of its bore. The double wide o-ring groove on the inner wide helps to keep the onner o-ing, stationary and allows the PR tube to slop in and out of the center of the inner o-ring without moving the ring too much.
