So, this engine has been sitting way too long in the WRONG environment!!
It was a garage with a concrete floor, it was on the floor and sitting in God only knows what!!

36 hp unit # 2688592 December, 1958

It will NEVER run again!!

It's FREE!!! First one to come can have it!

The moral of this post, store your engine PROPERLY!!!!!

There is a plus side, it had what I hope is a good thermostat hanging on the rod with the bracket and part of the case still attached! Haven't yet cleaned it or tested it, the slight crook in it concerns be though.

send the engine to "last triumph." you only need to decide between keeping the patina or having things powdercoated.

With what LT has been able to do with vinegar, baking soda and jet fuel, he'd have it running 8's in the 1/4 in less than a week.

So, Seriously,

I'm going to dump this engine. It is clearly "rough".

The crank pulley is good, maybe the crank, I don't know. Parts are becoming hard to locate for these I understand.

Is there anything that might be worth harvesting from this carcass?? If so, anyone want any of it...... Free. I'll ship it to you, just pay postage after you get it.

Let me know....

Dave

I've got one like that in my garage sitting on top of one just slightly better (and 7 more in considerably better condition). I picked it up out of the dirt it had been sitting in for a while and the dirt held together just long enough to put it in my bus; at which point the bottom of the case fell onto my foot in a fit of WTF! Burn it in a camp fire.

The only thing you can do with that case is chuck it in a fire and admire the light. Pretty amazing to see how much the magnesium has corroded.

Ok, I recently got a shed to get rid of my pile of "ugly" (so my wife says) in the side yard. That pile is a few engines and a transmission covered by a tarp.

On Monday it's all going into the shed, this motor into the dumpster (skip for you British folk). If you want it, tell me this weekend.

In that pile is a Square Back EFI engine. I've got everything, computer, wiring harness as well as the engine in unknown condition.
Come and get it. I'm NOT throwing it away....yet. but I'd love to have it gone. Price? Whatever it takes in gas to come and get it.
It is a "U" engine. I read the number as U 5023745 This seems to be a 71 California engine but like I said, not 100% sure.

The 36hp thermostats do that sometimes over time. I've seen a few like that. I think you are ok since it's not expanded but you might want to test it in hot water anyway.

Hmmmm, maybe I'll take a minute and yank them off and see how bad they are. If they fight me though I won't be happy!

I haven't any need for these at all nor do I foresee having a need.

Anyone? anyone? I'll pop them in a box and they are YOURS!!

How's the flywheel? If I recall correctly the 36hp flywheel has smaller dowel pin holes so its different than the 40hp. Somebody might need one, maybe a classified ad?
