|
|
Anyone installed the "german stainless steel heater hoses" ?
I got tired of fighting the stock paper/aluminum type and ordered
the SS ones. I even tried the orange "aircraft" type with the coiled copper wire inside--major hassles trying to install these down under the apron tin to the heater boxes. I've seen these on ac Porsches and even Lycoming boxer helicopter engines. ( Now THERE'S one heck of a flat 4!!! 5,000 cc!!)
I digress...........
Of course I don't have the stock fittings under the apron to the heater boxes. ( I rarely see anyone who actually has this put together correctly).
So the hoses go thru the flat apron down to the heater box inlet. ( shows this on the Samba Classified ad for SS hoses ). Bought 2, as it says.
Setup is Type 1 2110 in my '69 Westy with dual ceramic coated
exhaust and heater boxes.
Just wanted to know if anyone has experience good or bad?

I have done this. Here are a pics of them installed. I like these very much as they do not deteriorate at all. No more crushed hose.

Are they more stout? At least, sturdier than the foil ones? |

They are much more stout. It would take a significant effort to dent them. _________________ 71 Westy Hardtop, 1915

You can get those mentioned fittings made. I have a pair from A 1. It is the only way any of those hoses will really fit on so that they can be removed and reinstalled. |

I actually did mine in two pieces each side so that removal was not hard. I used the stock coupler as you can see in my top pic (earlier post) on the left side. _________________ 71 Westy Hardtop, 1915

you should use a cut-off wheel to cut it.
if that tells you anything _________________ 71 Ghia A/S - 88 Van A/T - 13 JSW TDI 6M/T |

I replaced my tubes with some extra hot air tubing I had left over from my Airtronic install. It's available for cheap from Espar. I got mine through thermo king. They are still a metalic wrapped paper like product, but they are very very sturdy and were an excellent replacement choice. I suspect they will hold up nicely for years to come. The diameter was a perfect fit. |

I went to the Thermo King site but couldn't find the hoses. Can you supply a direct link please? _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

It's Espar part number 10 2114 31 00 00 (60mm), 10 2114 34 00 00 (75mm), or 10 2114 31 00 00 (90mm).

Thanks for the replies.
I ordered mine from VW Parts Unlimited thru the Samba ad
and I'll report back when installed and post some pics.

Here's some pics ( sorry a bit blurry )--just installed them.
Took about 1/2 hour--a bit tricky on the heater box ends,
started there, made some pre-bends, trial/error fit--went well.
I'd go for these on any other similar engine.
cheers

I have been using them for a few years now. I will never go back to the cheese dog paper/foil ones on my personal cars.
you need to buy 2 if using them with a header, and trim to fit _________________

Cool I think I'll get them.
I am sporting the stock heater boxes but have a Vintage Speed exhaust you think I need two of those puppies?
Was fitting them to the heater boxes rather fiddly? _________________ "I spud therefore I yam." |
