|
|
Quick question... Is there a seal at the tie rod and PS rack that is causing this? This is the front passenger side.
It leaks (obviously) from this location... sometimes about 6inch diameter... sometimes a gusher. Power steering still works fine but has the growl.
Just hoping I can replace the Tie Rods. boots and bushings - wipe the ole hands and be done.
Thoughts? Here are the pics.
The bushing loooksss baaaaad

a growling PS pump usually means air is leaking into the system and from the pic, it looks like someone has tried to apply silcone in hopes of stopping that leak... |

There are seals in the housing where the shiny metal tubel slides in and out that are probably leaking. Looks like you need a new rack and pinion. Get new rubber mounts too. And dust boots if they do not come with a new R&P.
As far as growling pump. I would say that air can make a growl or whine. But...
Bearings growl when they are bad too... |

Thx guys... I dont think that is silicon, it is the way the photo looks. The second picture is a close up of the bottom passenger side bushing (I will definitely be replacing these) covered in fluid. It is totally shredded so it looks like goops of silicon, but it is actually the bushing.
Vogler, It only starts growling after it loses some fluid.
I will replace the entire assembly. Anything else while i'm under there?
Oh, and are 3ton rated jack stands good for the front end? _________________ 1985 Wolfsburg weekender SVX

If the noise stops when system is full then you should be ok. Only time will tell.
Make sure to count the tie rod ends when replacing, or measure so it is close on the toe setting. If your p/s hoses are looking shabby it would be a good time to replace them too. There are probably some crush washers in the banjo fittings where the lines hook up that should be replaced too. |
