Some interesting info on another thread
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=421762
Thought it might be more appropriate in the paint section for others to find easily.
Here are my findings
Krylon Jade green vs. L380 Turkis
pretty damn close!! Its a little bit lighter than the og turkis but good enough.
Krylon Cherry red vs. L456 Ruby red
Close but not as deep as true L456 ruby red, it is a little more bright red than the ruby. Its reported that Rustoleum Regal Red is a closer match.
Here are some pics from the thread matching other colors
Krylon Fusion River rock vs. L345 Light gray
Krylon Pebble gray is said to be a close match as well
Krylon Dover white vs. L82 Silver white
Krylon Almond vs. L87 Pearl White
Other reports from posters with no pics
Krylon Rust Tough Battle Ship grey is reported a close match for undercarriage factory primer. It does seem VW had different variations for their primer though.
Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch Gloss Ivory Bisque vs. L 282 Lotus White. And when I had trouble finding it, I also used Painter's Touch Heirloom White
Please add your matches with comparison shots against factory colors in non faded areas. |

Here is another one.
Krylon Honeydew Ambrosia vs. L289 Blue White
VERY CLOSE. Pic is bad due to lighting but on the left side almost under the seat frame where the og paint gets no sun exposure the krylon blends in perfectly!
Here are the two krylon colors together
Finally after 20 years the bus will have some color again!!
edit:
here is a picture of both Krylon honeydew and jade green (blue white/turkis) on the bus

Great idea derluftwagen. I was following the other thread thinking we need a krylon/rattle can thread of its own. _________________ Jonny

I just bought the jade green for my bug. It's a little lighter than the OG, but will definitely work until I can wrap up the rest of the body work and get a pro-paint job. The spray nozzle is cool too. It went on quickly and smoothly. Good recommendation. |

I found rustoleum almond is almost 77 "polar white". Close enough to paint the seat belt dings on the door. _________________ 77 super convertible |

I went to Tractor Supply Store and bought a gallon on Massey Ferguson grey enamel…its a dead ringer for L469 anthracite. I did a spray out and placed it on top of my anthracite beetle…not even a shade different! 32$ a gallon. |

http://cgi.ebay.com/New-KRYLON-52411-PUMPKIN-ORANG...2c5712a365
Using the ebay link for reference maybe Pumpkin Orange would be the closest when compared to Brilliant Orange ......This colors does kind looks like Hugger Orange to me - late 60's GM OEM color...
The link also has a chart that shows Krylon colors that some look close to VW OEM colors...Using this chart could help to get close to the color that is desired.. |

I'm doing a little gauge restoration/customization and have come to the point of needing to match the paint colors that appear on the speedo and clock needles. I was planning on mixing up a small bit of alkyd enamel to do the job, but it turns out I might not need to. I went to the hardware store and the first two spray cans I tested out turned out to be very close to the original colors. They are:
Standard Rustoleum brand: "French Roast" spraypaint. Very close to the (Chestnut?) brown paint used to paint parts of the clock and speedo.
Standard Rustoleum Brand: "Almond" spraypaint. Very close to the off-white paint used to paint the needles and numbers etc.
These are both gloss paints, but can be matted out with a coat of Rustoleum Crystal Clear Matte Finish.
I promise to update with a few pictures once my parts are complete enough to start painting. I apologize in advance if it takes awhile. |
