in putting the water tank into my van there was a dead mouse in it. it looks like it died there a very long time ago. it was dried out.

I cleaned the tank out with bleach several times...then let it sit full of bleach and water for a few days.

I rinsed it out today and it looks and smells clean... but i'm thinking I might want to get a new tank. ... just so i don't think of the dead mouse every time i turn the faucet on.

should it be ok?

I wouldn't be able to drink out of it ever again either.

I don't ever drink out of the tank water. I always bring bottled water for drinking. mostly use the water tank for cleaning dishes and utensils or hand washing.

eeeeeeewwwwwwwww. I'd get another tank. I'm sure that the cleaning you did is excelent and fine but how does one cleanse the mind!

I only use my tank (I mean I will only use my tank) for dishes, etc... but I'll have to clean it out first anyway.

The mouse was long dead, dessicated, and you're worrying about it after you've removed it and disinfected the tank with bleach?

I'd sell the bus if I were you. You wouldn't believe the icky stuff you'll find in nature when camping. There are live bugs out there that will fly right into your mouth! Imagine the germs they might carry! Shocked Laughing Laughing

And, if I were you, I wouldn't have any conversations with your local water distribution people. You may find out things you don't want to know and critters and water treatment!

I think everyone has covered it pretty well. With your cleaning, the tank is probably just fine. But when you've put as much work and care into that van as you have, you deserve not to have to be reminded of anything revolting when you turn on the tap. Also, even though you don't drink the water in the tank, it would be nice to be able to if the need ever arose.

I have no idea how hard to find Westy tanks are, but if they're available I vote "replace it."

Have you ever drank from a returnable bottle? A long neck Bud for instance? Can you imagine the nastiness that some of those bottles experienced?

Do you also take your own silverware out to eat? You stand a better chance of picking up some nasty bug eating at a restaurant than you would drinking from that water tank.

Come on guys, sack up. It was just a mouse.

It is unlikely that you'll find a brand new Westfalia water tank, so if you replaced it, you'd likely be putting in someone else's used tank. You have no idea what may have happened in/to that tank. When I got my last two Westfalias, I filled up the tank with bleach water and let it sit for quite a while, then ran it through the lines to the sink pump, thereby disinfecting the lines as well. I use my tank water for washing as well as drinking, and I feel perfectly comfortable with it.

See, I wasn't just creeping you out....there are creepy things that happen in water treatment plants, like floating pussy cats...I say drink up!

Years ago there was a woman's body found in one of the tubs at a local water treatment plant. She allegedly hopped the fence and committed suicide. She was in there for about a year before they found her.

You cleaned and sterilized it. It's fine. Really, the stuff that goes thru the municipal treatment plant would have you stop drinking out of your tap. If you really want to know, send a sample to a water testing company and see if they can find something wrong with it.

No affiliation. I just googled, water testing.
