So as I recall there were some cases made for about a half a year in 68 that had bad metal ( soft). Does anyone know the case numbers to stay away from? I've got a half a dozen or so old cases marked with an H prefix and don't want to waste time with machining bad metal. Thanks!

I never heard that there was a specific range of H engines that were worse than others, it would be good to know though.

While this search does take you to quite a few threads, read the titles and you will find some info on the H case/stud inserts etc are the ones to look for.

Basically F, H and B cases are for what ever reason some of the weaker in regards to head studs pulling ( no factory case savers) and possible weaker metallurgy/heat issues.

OK so the story goes, there was a foundry strike in mid-68? and Italian cases were made with poor metalurgy for 6months? until the strike was resolved. Anybody heard of that?

What I have gleaned from years of reading about engines and in particular the H case is that while there are "weaknesses" in the design, when compared with subsequent cases, that they are NOT bad cases at all for a stock build.

IF you desire to go with higher horsepower or any number of output increasing modifications then you would do well to move on up to a newer case which has greater strengths in given areas to enable them to take the stress and pounding that more HP produces.

Don't fear the H but respect it for what it is and use if for stock engines and you should be fine.

As with ANY case, check it carefully for warpage, cracks and evidence of severe pounding on the mains before investing money in it and using it.

Never heard of a strike and crappy Italian cases. IT will be interesting to see what information surfaces on this.
