I need to replace the hose that runs from the rear of the driver side head up to the coolant rail. How much coolant should I expect to lose in the process?
This is another one of those hoses that looked in good condition when I did my rebuild so I decided not to swap it even though I had a new one in hand. Well, I am finally going to put the new one in. Fortunately it wasn't catastrophic.
It started as an occasional drip of blue coolant on the bottom of the oil filter housing. Driving in traffic in 95 degree weather a week ago finally did it in. After that day I opened the engine bay and there was a fine mist of coolant over everything and a thick coating on the oil filter and the head. I ran it in the driveway today and after it got hot I could wiggle the hose where it connects to the head and cause small little jets of coolant to shoot out. _________________ 1986 Westfalia |

you mean the "pipe" looking hose?
I don't think you will loose to much if you do it quick.
just put a bucket under it and add back in what you loose. _________________ 1987 Westy Auto Bostig 2.0 Ztec |

I like to post answers to my own questions that I end up finding the answer myself
For future reference...with a cold engine, when removing the end of the hose at the coolant rail, only a few drops will escape. I small cup is all you can fit in that space and is all you need. When disconnecting the hose at the head, it will pour out but not ridiculously fast.
I disconnected the coolant rail end of the old hose and reconnected the new hose without clamp at the coolant rail. Next I got the head-side of the new hose at the ready (forget the clamp for now) and quickly removed the old hose at the head and attached the new hose. I probably spilled about a cup of coolant into a drain pan in the process. I then disconnected the coolant rail end again and slid the clamp on for the head connection. Finally put the clamp for the small end and tighten. _________________ 1986 Westfalia |
