Your woodworking was pretty impresive to begin with, almost hated to see you use it as a mold. How tough was it to get the dash to release from the aluminum taped mold?
Did the aluminum tape make a difference? I see you used blue painters tape for the tailight molds? Do you know if packing tape will work as well? I've got access to lots of packing tape.....
I've got a project of my own that could benefit form your expertise I'm sure.
Great looking dash _________________ Gary

gr8,
The aluminum tape works great. The only problem I had was the fiberglass rounded the curves and would not let the wood come out in one piece. I had to destoy the wood mold Lucky it turned out the first time. Lesson learned. I know what not to do for the center consol
The blue tape on the tail lights was used to cover the lens so they did not get scratched. also used it to cover the holes in the body to get a better look at how it would be. Pics coming soon
I am not sure how the packing tape will work. You will have to do a test and see. _________________ 73' Bug

Your Buggy is coming out really cool!
Did you buy this piece, or make it?

I like the look of your dash. Very unique! What are your plans for it? I can't wait to see it completed! _________________ ~X-Man~

Thanks for the nice comments , I did buy the gauge insert, the plan is to work more on the dash this weekend. I made inserts for the openings just have to do a little more triming to fit.
I think the store was called oldnewparts .com. Look on E-Bay under billet dash cluster or something like that. The gauges did not fit like I thought they would a little disapointed, the holes are machined a little too big for the gauge bezels. They show dolphin gauges in them, but the VDO are the same size. I found a way to fix the hole problem. _________________ 73' Bug

That came out Great man! I like how it's not a "traditional" dash.
I think that's where most of the Awesome buggies actually fail... The dash/layout of the gauges... That's why I made a different gauge pod for mine. Besides, I wanted something different that anyone else has. I'm just hoping that everything will fit once I'm done. I don't know if I'll even fit in it when it's done... I dropped my steering column at least 3" from where it used to be. I think I'm going to have to look into getting one of those removable steering wheels to get my fat ass in & out. _________________ ~X-Man~

Wow, the dash and the Camaro tail lamps look sweet! One question though, what are going to replace the water temperature with or are you going with Subaru power? G.B. _________________ Buggy Project underway.

Thanks for all the great comments...Cain't wait to start the console, I will keep you all posted on the progress.

That's going to be wonderful when it's all finished up ! ! ! SO much thought and detail in it; I love how the width of the center "pod" is right in line with the power bulge on the hood, and how the side pods somewhat look like extended/stretched versions of the tail lamp indents.
Just superb.
Shorty seems to have been doing his "build" in a similar manner, every time a decision as to components or approach and style comes up he's been considering what LOTUS has done rather than looking at the more traditional Manx/Manx-style buggies. Almost fashioning the interior and lighting details along those of a super car or current re-releases of the Detroit muscle cars, much like you appear to be doing.
I just LOVE your work and sensibilities ! ! ! Terrific ! ! ! ! Let's hope that this is the new trend; a lot fewer "as manufactured" dashes with those little bolt heads showing on either side of the stock VW Beetle speedometers, and a WHOLE lot more thought and design along the lines of what you and Shorty have been up to. |

Had a chance to start looking at how to design the center consol. First stages of the build I am sure it will change .
