The SA flaps on a Syncro fit very close to the tire - as you can see from that photo. If you do a lot of offloading this can be an issue for two reasons: you can pack up that small space with mud, and you can tear them off the van if you are trying to reverse out of a deep hole. The German ones are heavier and a better quality product, IMHO. I've had both. I believe all, or at least post-86 Vanagons, have the mounting holes for 4 mud flaps. |

@ izzydog
I guess your right, my 86 Syncro seams to have holes in the frame right at the mounting points.
And the off roading issues is exactly why I brought this up.
Thanks

After washing and waxing my van last night, I have come of the opinion that the german mudflaps mount too far from the tire for most applications. There are a LOT of rock chips in the area forward of the flap. |

So are there holes in the body for upper mounting bolts, or is that upper section just rigid enough that the lower bolts hold it in place?

Nope, there are two pegs on the upper "arm" of the mudflap that you have to drill for.
Courage and an appropriately sized drill bit will get you holes where you don't have them. My 85 Westy (2wd) only had factory holes for the driver's side front, which is really just there to protect the propane tank.
I mounted a passenger side front, and both rears, and had to drill for each. Truly a time when you want to measure twice (or more) and drill once. _________________ 1985 Westy, 1.9L automatic (Daisy)

Those german mudflaps are oddly rearward - allowing lots of needless stone chipping on the paint right behind the wheelwell. Hmm.
If you have mudflaps in the normal position but worry about ripping them off while backing into things, try this: I put stainless hardware on the bottom center of some rigs in the past, creating a place to hook a small stainless cable that is looped and secured up when not used. When wheeling, the cable is pulled down from its hiding spot behind the mudflap, the mudflap is pulled sharply rear and up against the body and the cable attached to the tip of the mudflap to hold it there. Now the flap is up out of harms way but still provides the same rock chip protection. Just looks goofy for road driving.
So, the mudflap is pulled up and back by its tip.
So, Allistair what happened to the little black plastic fin like things on the Syncro? My 87 is missing one and they're pricy but yours has no holes as it if never had them?

yeah Doug, you have to wonder why they are set so far back. I am sure the VW engineers had a good answer
Maybe its the time of night, or the beer, but what "black plastic fin like things" are you referring to?
cheers

At the bottom rear of all 4 wheelwells is a black plastic fin. It runs about 6" up the lip of the wheel well and at the bottom widest point is about 3" wide. One of mine is missing and I see they are factory and sell for big $$$. I was told this is a syncro only feature.

Doug,
now I understand, the sort of half wheel arch rubbers? shown here above the big flaps.
I wonder if they came on all syncros, will keep an eye out now...

They seem to be on all Syncro Westys that I've seen here in the US. Not sure about passenger Syncros but now I'll keep my eyes open for the local passenger vans around here - more than a few down here in the Bay Area... |

Mine's a passenger syncro and has the little mudflaplets. They're hard plastic with zero flex. Seem to be hollow molded hard plastic. The missing one left two 1/4" holes so some kind of expanding fastener I'm guessing. I'll be pulling the other 3 for body refinishing. |
