hey there,
thought id give you a heads up before you got too farther along. the rear body bow on convertibles up to 1964 must be installed and nailed in place then leaded over and then painted as those nail holes around the back of your car will be vissible. you could get away with haveing the material be extra long in back to cover this, but it may look a little funny. just thought id let you know becasue you may need to repaint the rear part of the car again.
Love that grey and white combo! really a nice vintage look! nice to see yet another vert being brought back from the depths of time ! |
Thanks for the nice comments and for the heads up. Do you have any documentation that I can read up on? We have all the new bows and if that's what it needs we'll get it done. My good friend (the painter) is like a brother to me. He painted the car for me and didn't even charge me.
Below is my inspiration. A '57 Cab from the front cover of Hot VW's in March of '85.

I figuratively beat my meat over that car in hot vws many times. 20000 restoration int he 80s, sure was a beaute! _________________ Official 58-60 "Early Big Window" Convertible Thread & Registry

I can only say that when I got my 60 the PO had taken about 90 percent of the tacks out of the rear bow including the wood. The few tacks that were left for sure had been filled over (Lead?) so those still have to be removed.
Also in my Bently in the convertable top replacement section section A-42, it clearly shows the rear bow where the wood meets the body and it's smooth as butter, no visable tacks. So I have to agree they are leaded over or filled in some manner. I've often thought about how someone could make a catch strip to mount to the wood so one could mount the top like the later models, I don't know why it couldn't work. Just a thought. |

you could weld all the holes up and bolt the rear bow with bolts through the top into the body like a later car if you were really gung hoe about it. since the top is stapled to it, you could easily pull back the headlining, unbolt the bow and top frame and have an early car with removable top. no real advantage to this though unless you were gonna craft a hardtop roof to put on the vert for winter. but honestly once that wood is leaded on and painted over, you probably wont need to think about it for more than 20 years. _________________ Official 58-60 "Early Big Window" Convertible Thread & Registry

I had an early 59 back in the late 80s and the top had been restored prior to my ownership. There were small brass screws that went through the factory tack holes and were NOT leaded over. The factory material that covers the staples covered both the staples AND the screws. I did not even know they were there until I removed the top when I traded the vert for my 56. I think the screws had a better bite into the wood than the tacks would have. _________________ Grapes of Wrath $200 Engine Rebuild

Those Brass screws seem like a great way to go, Better Bite into the wood over time one would think. Plus you don't have to beat on your car. When you re-installed the top again did you go with the screws? |

What a great color combo. Very earthy and that engine looks like that Beetle moves pretty quick. The Horn ring is super. I Love it. What kind of engine tar-board is that? If you don't mind. |

Here is my 60 vert. I also know where there are two others. A 58 and a 59. They are rough. Look in my gallery and you will find them.

not my thread but I would say because:
non four finger front apron
non hump tank and related sheet metal
no four tab hood
no manual choke
non clear needle speedo
aluminum dash trim vs. cast chrome
non H rear apron
40 hp engine
syncro trans
no possibility of semaphores
I think the fact that they share more similarities with oval verts is the main reason. Even though they were all built by Karmann, many things changed with the 61 model year.
I look at 60 and earlier cars as collectible while 61 up as drivers due to all the improvements. _________________ Grapes of Wrath $200 Engine Rebuild
