The picture says it all! My son only gets 6-7 months and about 5000 miles out of these clutch cables. They all break in the same place. The hook has been radiused ans there are no rough surfaces. The clutch is just a Stage 1 kennedy.[img][/img] |

All the VW stores were closed when i really wanted to replace my clutch cable so I checked at Checkers. They had it! I was soo surprised. It was thicker cable too and comparing the aftermarket replacement to the Checkers one there was a clear difference. The head that attaches to your pedal was thicker as well. Good luck ). _________________ 2276 IDA's 86C 11-1 DD !

Aren't the Kennedy's stiffer than stock components? Maybe not. BUT if so you could try a taller arm on the trans. Bowden tube sag may need adjusting. If the hook is fine on the pedal shaft and not gouging out the cable eylet (does the eylet just break or snap?), then they're either crumby cables or you may want to consider the taller arm. The taller arm reduces the effort to engage/dis-engage the clutch, thus reducing wear on all associated parts. There was a guy on here a few years back that had lots of the taller arms for sale. I ordered one from him and have it here. Turns out I didn't need it, but rather a new Bowden tube instead. _________________ '66 Beetle

I dont see any greas on the head of that cable. Grease will add years to the life of the cable AND hook |

It's a1700 pound PP and it has a long arm. I think stock PP is 1300 pound

The grease was wiped off to take the picture.
I think they are just crap metal on the cable end. |

I know this works for accellerator cables, as I'm using one now.. but doesn't Morse make a cable that can be used for the clutch too?
I got my Morse cable at an offroad shop, but i'm sure they're available at a lot of places..
a quick google for "morse cable" finds this to be like the 3rd link down: http://www.jegs.com/p/JEGS/JEGS-Morse-Push-Pull-Cables-and-Accessories/763984/10002/-1
if you want strong, I think these are some of the best.. _________________ -pariah (just a novice from "that other VW site")

That's a real expensive fix. He would have to fab hydraulic lines, fittings, etc. Worst, the clutch is not as responsive as a stock set up. That's the reason I'm selling my billet set up. You have to run a stiff clutch. Stick to a stock set up and replacement. Leave the hydraulic set ups to the racers and piperail guys. _________________ 2276 IDA's 86C 11-1 DD !

I have a KEP stage 1 and cable from CB Performance, it's still going with very little wear after 3 years. _________________ Build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=212747

Typically when a cable ends wears like yours, I have found that the hook or pedal arm the cable rides in is torn up too, causing the cable to wear prematurely.
Not saying that's the case in your situation, but just a thought. |

aye
I have made a few deals like that that uses a rollerskate bearing and the stock cable snaps into it.
This way I get to use all those cables with the end worn through........don't throw em out! |
