Did you get a red cross light for the top of your ambulance yet?
I see there are many for sale in the classifieds section that look like the one in that photo from "the killing fields", but this one is an interesting style that I have never seen before.
Also if you have not made up your mind whether or not to removed the extra front lights yet, I think you should keep them. They look Kool IMHO. |

Mitch thank you for selling your 1961 ambulance to me. I will continue work on this ambulance until I get it road worthy. I know that some of you are following this thread and the progress Mitch has made on getting this ambulance back on the road has been time consuming and fun to follow.
Out of all the buses I have owned, I have always wanted an ambulance. It's only taken me 15 years of searching and then all of the sudden I end up with two. I can make a complete ambulance with all the interior out of both the 61 and 58 parts. I am eager to work on them this weekend and get few things done.
I am also interested in hearing from other ambulance owners on their projects. There appears to be only a few barndoors and looking through all of the threads it appears that only a handful of 55-61 ambulance are still on the road.

Hi Mitch, Let me introduce myself. Im Todd Penn. Owner -operator Air Cooled Classics in Saskatoon. I have the 56 Ambulance Trevor mentioned earlier,I got the ambulance from my friend Dave Sturby after his passing. I remember the two of us at a Soto meet in it back in the 80,s I plan on a full resto one day. I can share knowledge and literature and many photos of ambulances Ive come across in my 33 years in the Vw bussiness.I came across a running original in Melbourne Au. last year and took a ton of pics..My 56 came out of a german military base in Manitoba and has been here in s,toon since 79.Your's came off a sask farm stash which was never offered for sale till the farmer died and his wife had them towed out for scrap value .I couldn't believe it when I was told the were sitting in a wreckers just a few blocks from my shop,I tryed to make a deal but Andrew got there an hour before me The 3 sold for the unbelievable price of 500.00 The salvage guys couldn't understand why anyone would want these old Vw's They would have been crushed in a matter of hours. I,m happy to see you saving a great piece of canadian history.Im still trying to figure out why we had German military bases here just after the war. And could you imagine the horror of being on that stretcher in a 36hp 6 volt van with an unreliable S/W gas heater at 40 degrees below zero.I hope I can help you with your undertaking. _________________ 2010 Bonneville record holder Type 2, 36hp

Sweet sticker,I do find it hard to believe that our socialist gov. ever had Vw's in their hospital fleets. I met a few local ambulance collectors Ill have to ask them about this. The 233 phone number is not from around here is there a town name anywhere. I scored a saskatchewan dept of highways 13 window last year .It has the provincial paint scheme but no markings. _________________ 2010 Bonneville record holder Type 2, 36hp

It says its from TELUS Quebec 579-233-4244. The bus originally was imported into Alberta (KA). _________________ Think big drive a bus...

Well its been a few months since I posted on the 1961 Ambulance. I gave the 61 its nick name today. Its now known as the 61 "Ambo Butcher" bus. The nick name comes from it first being a ambulance and the logo on the side of it later in life being run as a meat locker. Here's its fair well drive as my buddy try's to hit me so he can make one last run to the hospital with me in it. Mitch correct me if I am wrong this ambulance has been off the road since the old farmer owned it up in Alberta correct? So it hasn't moved on its own for over 30 years I am guessing.

I replaced all the brakes, flex lines, and master. I installed a new brake mainline front to rear and installed 1600DP to move it forward. The electrical need work so I had a day in repair on that. I also repaired the notorious ambulance hatch hinges that always fail.
The new owner is jazzed to have a very rare and unique bus. He is already on the hunt for the interior bits to complete his project.
I am off to start my 58 ambulance project and I will continue my thread there. _________________ Think big drive a bus...

This is a late update on the 1961 Canadian Ambulance. I sold the ambulance about a year and half ago to a guy down in Long Beach, which turned around and restored it. It was then sold back east, New York I believe. Here are the final photo's before it left California. I posted more in the gallery.
