I was curious of this to. Aftermarket hack or set up originally for the ambulance. My guess it was for the lights. Good idea.

So I went through my stash of parts and came up with a ton of stuff that I needed to get this project up and running. I found a motor to use and trans axle but I'm thinking I'm going to start on the rough body work. Get all the panels to fit. Open and close then move on to making it run and operate. I wan to paint the inside and prime the out side and leave the passenger compartment alone. It's hard to say when to stop. My first Idea was to run it ratty looking but working on the parts they were just to bad off and could not be reused making the functioning of the bus non existent.

I found one indented door handle door and one flat I know 61 should have the indent but would it matter if I ran the flat one. I'm guessing I would need to change door handles? Does anyone have a passenger indent front door there looking to sell?

Has anyone seen this little hole next to the over head light? It's smaller than the overhead light I'm guessing it lit up some additional light maybe the ambulance search light/driver side mirror.

I started with the driver side door hinges that were left on the body. I used a torch and screw driver bit in a breaker bar. It worked great. out of all the screws I only lost two to the heads breaking off that's pretty good in my book usually they all snap off or become unuseable

What a kick ass bus!!! We should display your ambo, my cop truck, and Jim Bass' Fire truck single cab together at the BOR what a kick! I think I have a decent recessed handle door passenger door I would part with, I'll look at the shop later today. I think I have a perfect light grey fat dogleg, upper half only I'll look. Congrats!!!

No idea. Must be an earlier ambulance feature.

No idea. Looking at the mounts, is it possible that it was for an axe - for access to patients in damaged cars, etc.?

this.

I know you have a '68 tranny sitting around somewhere. Better yet, early short axle with narrowed torsion. You know you want a "proper" bus in the stable Smile (aren't you glad I couldn't buy that double door off you now??? Smile)

Looking good Mitch, looking good. Hell, it's been a week and you just about have the front end ready for rough-in fill? Great progress.

Despite favoring the utility and drivability of patina cars, I'd vote for a full respray in Ivory. I think it deserves a nice life in retirement. Hell, it just reflects the essence of an ambulance, getting dropped off at the make-better place Smile

I was thinking axe or shovel. Maybe oxygen or something along those lines?

I'm stoked on this ride it's allways fun tearing into a new project that's probably why I have so many unfinshed cars laying around. I want to get the back corners dialed in this weekend to at least look presentable. Then it's time to get the big ol sand blaster out rent a compressor and have at the underside. I'm thinking of striping the flat pannels and using rust mort to kill the surface rust. I'm going to do anything I can that doesn't cost any money then go from there. I haven't done anything to lower a bus in the past. Yes I have a 68 bug trans that would be perfect anyone have the formula of what I need to lower it without going into major details just a simpletons explanation would work. 3 inch drop spindles up front and the bug trans out back do I need a set of notched spring plates or get off set ones. I would like to see it lowerd like 3 inches total not so slamed you cant fit a jack under it. What about bumper colors Red, Body color Ivery, or White with the wheels beeing white as well. Red wheels, bumpers and the red cross may look slick.

Get your spindles flipped by Aaron (Widefive.net) or even better have him make you a set of 63 only flipped spindles so you can run later (cheaper) brakes. I think he even has a set already done and ready to bolt up.
Then Get some stepped springplates from Womack suspensions and toss that 68 tranny in it.
You will then need to either run thing drums, machined down early bus drums or 4 to wide 5 adapters depending on the rims you want to run.
