No idea. Looking at the mounts, is it possible that it was for an axe - for access to patients in damaged cars, etc.? |
I was thinking axe or shovel. Maybe oxygen or something along those lines? |
Come on, don't ignore the manuals area.

Same guy who does the seat handles does the grab handles
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=744260
I honestly think that DD my friend found has a popout handle like that I was looking at it thinking it was a BD one but I think it attached like normal long spoons.
I will ask him. |

Good hunting Mitch!
I don't think those style handle ends have been reproduced. Gary does the barndoor bulkhead ends for sure, but those are different. Original ends are not too hard to find, and the pipe can be cut to length if it is different than the normal bulkhead grab handles.
The popout latch is a '53 and earlier barndoor specific version, and is pretty similar to the doublecab version. That popout frame is either a DC one or a '53 & earlier bus frame, and is probably not correct for your ambulance. |

Wow thats crazy I would guess it's a DBL cab one vs barn door. The glass is original so it would have to been swaped out early in it's life for some one to find that glass and use a 53 or earler frame. The interior color on the window looks OG so my best guess would be a left over dbl cab window and latch was used on this ambulance.
Greg were ambulances built by a seperate company and a Kombi was delivered or were they out fitted at the factory for ambulance work. I took at stab that you may know |
Who knows what they did with that popout window. Maybe ambulances used those as well, but I do not know why. Actually, I don't know why early doublecabs used them either, seems like it would have been easier just to use the same windows as the kombis used.
I had some ambulance popout windows a few years back, based on the Sigla logo they were '57-'58, and they were just normal popout windows. They were not the special doublecab ones.
I believe your ambulance is a factory conversion, but I am not an expert on them. I know that Miesen made ambulances real early on, but I think all of the later ones were done in house. All of the parts can be found in the factory spare parts lists', if that is any indication. |

wow love the stretcher in the back and glad you got the bits ,must say ups were fast ie 4 days .
lots of strange things in ambulance`s ie the buzz`s in the back on both sides . my one has the shelf in top left side but i believe that was a late model addition . good that you got the glass in the middle still .
keep the progress up
cheers Paul |

Hi Mitch,
Now you have the rhd step its time to make it the worlds first double door ambulance.. unless anyone knows different...
Joking of course, enough work to do without butchering a big hole in the side...
May have some parts for you, will get back to you next week.

Glad to see this bus found a home where it will be saved. I missed getting it from the scrap yard by one day and Andrew scooped it on me. Last I heard he was gonna part it out but looks like you have saved it which is good to see.
As far as the lights on the front go I'm not aware of any laws back in the day of this province stating it needed those. The other ambulance in town that's a couple years older than yours doesn't have them.
Good luck with the resurrection! _________________ 53 Canadian standard oval

Any more progress on this? I am curious how you fixed/plan to fix the dogleg? I have an OG paint bus and the dogleg is exactly like that. _________________ "There is only one sin; disconnection from self." |
