Have been looking at the pics and it seems that the stock dash was pretty bare. Am wondering if there is something wrong with my Gas tank since it appears to have a float so I was thinking was there supposed to be a gas gauge or if not did the tank even need a float?

Fuel gauges were an option in 57. There were gauges made by both Dehne and VDO.

With no gauge obviously a tank float is not needed, however I find my gauge pretty useful so I'd suggest looking for a gauge.

Post a pick of you tank/float so we can figure out what type you are looking for.

Hahaha that would sure beat having to check how much gas is in the tank with a match.

OKay will take a pic. By the way are the gauges supposed to be on the tank not the dash? Saw one that was for the tank in the classifieds.

My 57 doesn't have a gauge but has a reserve switch.

All fuel gauges were options up until 1962. Besides the two manufacturers mentioned above (VDO & Dehne) there were numerous other brands such as Stork, MotoMeter/Motest, Koch, Drager just to name a few

Tell me about it. That's why I am looking for a stock gas can and sneakers to walk all the way to the petrol station if needed.

Really!?!?!? I drove a 60 for YEARS and only ran out once. Amazing what a pencil and a small note book can do for you.
I've had gas gauges and run out more frequently for the accuracy of most gauges SUCKS!!!

Get gas, write down the mileage,
30 MPG's? start looking for gas in about 250 miles and fill up.
You'll NEVER run out of gas with this method! Actually more accurate than a fuel gauge.

They used to make little wheels that clipped onto the visor and you'd set the mileage you got gas at or wanted to get gas at. No book required.

Have a smart phone? just make notes in the phone's notepad when you last got gas and you'll be a high tech mileage keeper!! Why you'll even have a calculator as well so you don't need to do math in your head!!

^^ Actually you are right. I was just kidding but I have never run out of fuel with the Oval. But I have once with my GTO which was 12 years younger. What I love about my Oval is it also is much much more economical yet zippy in the city.

I have a little counter... It's clipped to the sun visor. You fill up, then turn the little wheels (6 numbers) to update the miles reading from the pedometer. You drive. You check once in a while how much you drove since the last refill (update).

... I also have a wooden stick with marks on it... A period dealership accessory. I actually use it on occasion. I am thinking to make a reproduction to keep the original one perfect.

A repro stick would be neat. Got pics of it?

never ran out of gas with any bug or split window single cab. On the single cab I used a pencil to write the mileage when I had to have gas right on the dashboard, just looked at the miles and ...

on the other hand, ran out of diesel, jetta tdi, in the columbia gorge this summer, light comes on telling me I had 2 gal of fuel, easily 65 miles, road signs tell me i have 45 miles to the big truck stops at Troutdale, thanks to 40+ mph winds i ran out 2.1 miles away,,,,, had to ride my bike to town.

I just think you (I) am more aware of the gas when you dont rely on some gauge

If you could copy the original, I would like one, too.

As for gas, I always check it with a flashlight before I leave the house.

Regarding the stick-gauge, I did not know there could be interest / a market for it. I may consider making a few. I will see how much of it I can repro (there is a LOT of neat text printed all over it, etc). Stay tuned.

I will post pics of my stick, which is an original dealership accessory (it has an Oregon VW business info on it). It does not look like the sticks in the classifieds section. It's thicker and BLUE. It has Litres on one side, and Gallons on the other. It's neat...
