Some time ago, there were photos posted on the site from old beetle crashes. I've been searching and I can't find them.

I'm specifically looking for the pictures where the front torsion tube was pushed back and the steering wheel is now just about where the driver's face would be.

Can anyone help out on this?

I'm NOT looking for any other crash photos but those, so lets not turn this into a crash fest photo opportunity!

Thanks!

Make the driver an offer, he may need to pay the Ambulance driver for a ride.

That's why I don't have seat belts in my bugs. If I'm lucky, I'll be thrown clear.

Thanks fluxcap! Those are the ones!

I think there is still one I'm looking for that the steering shaft is right about where your eyeballs would normally be. It was a side view and the car was pointing to the left.

If anybody has that one, I'd appreciate it!

Thats definatly not the first time I heard that argument.

Im sure the motoring public in the 40's 50's, 60's, 70's..hell now, knew these cars were nothing more than a large German Bierdose. Good luck in any type of crash. Pictures tell the story of why the steering shaft became collapsible in later years.

Yes, that steering wheel shaft is really scary. I'm a big guy, and it would wipe me out in a heartbeat.

Dr. Scope. I know which pics you're talking about and I can't seem to locate them. Sorry.

Ya know.. It's almost worth modifying the shaft just for safety purposes. I have no problem doing this kind of modification to a original car.

It's easy enough to install a later collapsable shaft.

I might just do that... Too many damn deer and drunk rednecks on my road.

I hate to ever think I would crash my baby, but if it ever does happen, I don't want a steering wheel in my chest, or be impaled by the shaft. That would pretty much ruin my day.

I did a search for this mod but didn't find anything. Do you know of any Dr?

That second video, the one labeled as a "VW Bus Crash", is that really a VW Bus? Doesn't look like it to me, but I am a Type 1 guy so I am no expert on all the Type 2 variants.

I've previously seen that second video attributed to be some sort of mainland China made vehicle.

Almost certainly the driver of that bug died in the crash, which is a shame.

It's also a shame for the bug as if you look at the photo carefully you can tell that the state of the paint job implies that it was almost brand new and very likely in almost pristine shape before it became one with the tree.

I too wonder how that accident played out. Looks like it was moving at a relatively high rate of speed in a turn when the wheels broke traction and it slid laterally off the road.

The video labeled "bus crash" is not a VW, but a Chinese truck that looks similar to a VW product. Those old crash photos don't give speeds, or the object that the bugs were run into. I have seen some pretty hairy accidents involving bugs that at first glance looked bad until you inspected the passenger zone. They survive fairly well compared to other cars in their size class. Of course they are not as safe as most cars produced since the early 1990's with the standardization of air bags. The key is to have good seatbelts, and drive like everyone else is insane!

Yes it is. It's not a bus though, it's a Vanagon doublecab.
