If you look up the video on YouTube under Chinese truck crash test you will find this video. It is definitely a copy of a Vanagon though! _________________ OK Thang |

Almost certainly the driver of that bug died in the crash, which is a shame.
It's also a shame for the bug as if you look at the photo carefully you can tell that the state of the paint job implies that it was almost brand new and very likely in almost pristine shape before it became one with the tree.
I too wonder how that accident played out. Looks like it was moving at a relatively high rate of speed in a turn when the wheels broke traction and it slid laterally off the road. |

Ive also read that it is a real Vanagon that had its frame weakened and loaded with bricks, to test the car launcher and wall. Either way, it isn't a normal VW.
here is a series on vanagon safety, pretty interesting http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJGaiOrkQwQ&feature=related |

My 68 was hit at like 50 mph head on, luckily I wasn't in it, and it looked exactly like the severe one. And the seat does pop out of the rail just like the photos. _________________

Yes. The part that collapses is about the same diameter as the outer tube of the steering column. So just to make sure, pull off your left front wheel and check to see how much room you have between shaft and tank. You need about an inch more then with the stock shaft. _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |

some friends of mine hit a horse square on in their 60's bus...
luckily mommy and baby were sleeping in the back.
everyone was ok but the driver had to unlace his boots to get out!
the horse was not so lucky. |

Is it the same length drop in replacement?
Is it still available new since its a crash part? _________________ aka Ken {o\!/o}

It's been a long time since I did this, but I think they were the same length.
We had to remove the steering column from the car, remove the old shaft, load the new shaft into the column and then reinstall the column with the shaft in it. But I don't remember this being any big deal.
I don't know if they are still available new, but I would look for a fat chick in the bone yard.
I just got back from my local pick & pull type yard and there were 4 super beetles in there. (very unusual) They won't work! they had a different shaft with u-joints in it. So you need to find a 68 and up standard beetle.
I'm not sure when they started this, but I know they had them in 68. _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |

Thanks. Im sure I can make one work.
Im pretty sure 68 started it, when the new bumpers were intoduced at least for the U.S..... I cant speak for non U.S.
I was just curious since the new column with ignition switch was introduced in 68 along with the collapsible shaft, were they the same length as the old ones.
Funny I have owned over 100 pre 1967 Beetles, but never owned a post 67.
We cant find too many Air Cooled Beetles in our salvage yards. _________________ aka Ken {o\!/o}

I'm not sure if they started this in 67, but I do know they had them in 68. I snagged one last summer from a 68 in the bone yard, so I know they had them. _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |

I'd be very curious if you have supporting evidence for this statement... a source of some sort. It looks distinctly like a VW van. |

VW bus crash, it was a test of the crash system, the vw was loaded with 1 ton of concrete then slammed into the crash simulator at 100mph, normally crashes are conducted at MAX 60mph unlaiden. as you can see the crash simulator stands upto the impact very well! |

60 miles an hour or more on a curve to the right. Driver over corrects or is inattentive and fish tales on wet/icey road and slides with drivers side door to front/tree side and became a taco. It was nice bug to. Most likeley not survivable, but wierd things happen.
From a old crash investigator.
Notice the WWII uniforms in the back ground and the German Lic Plate. Cool. The guy in the Trench coat is probably a CID agent. _________________ "Sic Vic Pacem, Para bellum - Pray for peace, prepare for war."

It's not photos, but some pretty interesting information regarding Beetle safety, at least in their heyday.
It's the Road and Track rebuttal to the Nader book about Volkswagens.
It's a lot of reading but I found it very interesting.
