Paramedic was probably a VW/Porsche fan, and rescued the engine before extricating the driver.

All the industrial engines I've seen had a single carb in the center, like a VW. Not saying they never made dual carb engines. That is a pre-T2 (mid 1957) engine, the manifold is for a Solex single barrel carb.
