My 82 Westy has the original ply wood on the floor (under cabinets and under carpet of Kitchen area).
I noticed that the passenger Vanagons have this very nice molded hard foam in this same area.
1. Has anyone tried fit the molded foam from a passenger Vanagon into a Westy?
2. What’s under the Kitchen area on a later model Westy? _________________ 82 orange Diesel Westy

Plywood. It loooks like scrap from Westy cabinet production, ,... cut to fit.
Thick felt is used under the rear bench and under part of the water cabinet
That and petrified cheerios, paper clips, a penny or two, usually at least one beer cap, and about 1/4lb of fine grained sand and silt. _________________ -89 GL Westy, SVX.. finally.

I observed that rust behind the kitchen starts at the sheet metal overlaps (where the body panels are welded with spots welds). Almost all sheet metal overlaps on the entire Vanagon that are exposed to water is sealed body sealing caulk - with the exception of the Kitchen area. These sheet metal overlaps have no paint in the gap – basically bare metal!
To me that is the big problem for an area with that much condensation and leak issues.
Since I have very little rust there yet I plan to seal all overlaps with 3M Body sealer.
I still have not decided on insulation in that area. Here are my thoughts:
By using R13 home insulation I’m afraid that it will absorb moisture.
By using adhesive insulation I’m concerned to trap moisture.
Does anyone have long term experience with insulation??
Any suggestions or pictures on where to drill the drain holes?
Here are some pictures of my not yet rusted kitchen area

Those three plastic boxes have rusted out more westys than you can shake a garden hose at. |
that's a pretty scary comment, esp. since you're in Calif. |
I discovered on my Vanagon that the main source of a water leak was not from the plastic boxes or condensation on the panels. After I removed the cabinets a "hose down" test actually shows that the water is coming from the vertical body panel seams. By the factory the seam are sealed from the outside with a black sealer and painted over in body color. Over time the sealer developed hairline cracks that now pull in water behind the cabinets. On my Westy the leak is pretty substantial even though the sealer only has very thin cracks. _________________ 82 orange Diesel Westy
