I know the later tanks mid 60's + used a 60mm cap. Are they the same? |
The 60s tanks used a 70mm cap. Busses usd a 60mm cap that has a VW logo just like early Beetle caps. But the zwitter cap is blank AFAIK. _________________

That can be caused by the vent on the gas cap being plugged. The tank walls get pulled in due to the vacuum that is formed. _________________ It all works on paper.

Split tank showing the small pressing around fill neck.
The later has a large pressing (indentation) around the fill neck.

Thanks suboval for the pix, that really clears things up for me.
Still don't know what the 60mm cap should look like. the one in the pix above looks like a cog with no "VW" logo in it.
I'll snap some pix of mine over the weekend and get them posted.

So no one has the 60mm cap?
didn't get the pix, but my cap is Smooth top with a coin edge. Made by Blau (i think that's how you spell it.) Is this correct?

Does anyone have a picture from Solvang showing Wil's 52 rag top? He had the tank in question. _________________ It all works on paper.

Ok, took pix last night.
VW is a Aug. '52 w/ 60mm neck tank.
Now i'm not claiming this is OG to the car. This is what i have with the car.
Thoughts?

I would expect to see a VW logo somewhere on the original cap. _________________

What would the 60mm (zwitter) gas cap look like?

It's now been 1 month 3 days 17 hours 10 minutes since i first posted this question. No one has, I'm now guessing this Really Rare cap.
It feels good to stump the group.

I have one of those caps at home in a box. From what I remember, it's looks exactly the same as yours. Haven't looked at it in a while. I got it from Simon Mitchell in Germany when he was still into the VW scene. I was going to use it on my Zwitter but decided to chrome an old Bus cap because I liked the looks of it better. _________________ My Beetles :

So a bit more research and i have come up with this.
Please tell me if this is the correct 60mm cap that no one has a picture of.
This one the outer is Aluminum and the innards is steel. A bit different than the Ghia/bus, the VW goes further to the edge of the top.
So is this it, did i find the correct cap for this rare tank?

So no one has a thought on the above pictures. Is this the correct cap?
also been doing some reading in Progressive Refinements.
This is what i found.
29 July 1952 - 1-0374 199 - Now: 60mm dia. (formerly 100mm) (page K-3)
10 Mar 1953 - 1-0454 951 - Now: 80mm dia. (formerly 40mm (may be a typo)) (page K-4)
4 Aug. 1955 - 1-0929 746 - Now 60mm dia. (formerly 80mm) (page K-6
29 Jan 1959 - 2 269 017 - Now 80mm dia (page K-10)
Now there is no mention of it going back to 100mm. But we know it did. It's just not in the book. And what about that 40mm. i'm thinking this is a typo?

PR is waaaayy wrong.
The 10 Mar 53 entry should be Now: 100mm, formerly 60mm.
Then 4 Aug 55 should be Now 80mm, formerly 100mm.
I think the 1959 entry is about the cap venting, not a diameter change
The 4 Aug 55 entry also talks about the shape change. _________________
