Hi Folks
I have been looking for a replacement torque Converter and I might have found one.
There is suppose to be a code stamped on one of the feet and should be the letter H or X.
The TC I have located appears to have the letter D stamped on it.
So, what does that mean? and do I have to keep looking . its for a 1986 Westfalia.
Txs

after some research, I found this thread.

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...cHb1mPsltU

It suggests : there are basically 3 or 4 converters. 1750 (Type 4,) unknown ( Early Vanagon to March 27 1981 - D code,) 2400 (Early Vanagon including 1.9 wbx - Z code ) and 2700 (Late Vanagon with 2.1 wbx - H code.)

So can a D code TC be adjusted to an H code TC by the rebuilder?
Thanks for any help.

I’d ask Precision of New Hampton, they rebuild them, Samba members seem to recommend them.

Yes I was planning to call them tomorrow. I sure hope it's just a stall speed thing and they can set it correctly for a 2.1

I don't know if the "D" TC can be modified, but you will have noticeably poorer performance if you use it without modification. From memory the "H" and "Z" torque converters have a 350 rpm higher stall speed than the "D" converters. No clue what the difference between the "H" and "Z" converters is.

This is what Bentley has to say:

Converter code letter :
D-up to build date 3/27/81
Z-3181 to 7/85
H-From 8/85
Note
Torque converter with code letter Z has
a modified impeller and turbine vanes
and can be installed in earlier vehicles.

So can I use a D converter in an 86 if I can adjust the stall speed? It would not have the modified impeller and turbine vanes. Txs

Again, an actual rebuilder would be the best person/business to say, so, let us know what Precision says about it. I can only say with experience, if the wrong torque converter is installed, esp a lower stall speed version into a higher rated transmission with no modifications, just a drop in, you are not a happy camper. Crying or Very sad
What I also wonder is converting the stall speed of the internals greatly raises a rebuild price, or not. that too would be nice to know... Think

i just looked in ETKA for an 81. the converter listed is a "Z" which tells me you don't want to use the one you have

the p/n is 090323571 X with the X meaning they want a core. so the Z is clearly an upgrade.

rule of thumb is stall speed should be 500-700 RPM below the engine RPM at peak torque
