That is great John. Thank you!
Thanks to a very generous Samba member we were able to get copies of the original Swedish plates that are listed on the registration papers.
And now one of it's current owners.
Dick is looking very pleased.

As should you - stunning results!
Congratulations!

Reading through your posts it is hard to believe this is the same car : http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=376247&sid=84283a712b05863b989eb48935cbd20a
Nancy, you have entirely transformed this once-lowly forlorn reject.
..into a thing of beauty!
Hats off to your dedicated efforts (+ Samba documentation)!
Now enjoy driving and showing it!

Thank you Grant! We were very fortunate and had a great time sharing the restoration with anyone that asked.
We will be participating in the 10,000 Lakes Concours d'Elegance this coming Sunday will be another chance to represent the VW hobby with our 1949.

Not sure what you are asking. Do you have a picture of the area you want to see? |

WOW!
Congratulations on an awesome restoration!
You have given me the much needed inspiration to start working on my medium brown '51 too.
I just pulled the trigger on buying some of Mika's (virtanen) products and was very surprised to find out they are coming from you! Well...I love the connection & it only seems fitting!
Very nicely done & I can only dream of having mine look like yours someday...
ALOHA!!! |

Yes, I want to say congratulations as well! Anyone that has tried to find a split to buy, owned a split, tried to find the correct parts to make it back to stock, and then tried to slowly fix the rust and make it all look nice knows what a labor of love it truly is. and money!
Blessings to you and your husband! My hat is off to you! You saved another split, brought it back to it's original glory! I am sure a lot of people say thank you! and you shared the process with us. My day will come! Tim |

Thank you Erron and Tim for the nice complements.
It has been a long, hard, expensive journey, but worth it in the end.
It's been interesting now that the car is done. We also have a 1962 rag top beetle (formerly my grandmothers car) that is completely restored to original condition and equal standards as the 49.
It's way more "cute" than the 49 (turquoise versus middle brown), but of course the rarity and uniqueness of the 49 far exceeds that of the 62. At generic car shows that both cars are present at, the 62 generally gets an award and the 49 gets nothing.
German car shows are a different story. Enthusiasts (even the Porsche crowd) understand the rarity of the 49.
I love them both and enjoy taking them on errands, to work, or out to dinner which almost always gets at least one smile and wave.
I'll be driving the 62 250+ miles to a VW show on Friday in Fargo, ND.
Here they are together.

Congratulations for taking first taking first place at Volkswagens in the Valley car show! Martin was a big hit. It is fun to watch peoples faces as they look at the the car and they read the registration card "Wow!" is the usual response. Hard work pays off and excellence is rewarded. You and Dick should be very proud. _________________ Bill |

Hearing this from you Bill, is a wonderful complement. Thank you!
And thank you and the RRVVW Club for putting on such a spectacular three day event. We had a blast sharing Martin with the other 107 VW enthusiasts.
Maybe the best moment Saturday was when Dick gave the "Little Brother" Alan Hicks is mentoring, the ride in the 1949 he had been asking about all day. The smile on the little guys face was huge. |

Driving back from the Fargo show, I was thinking about this exact thing. How few people actually have any idea how rare it is to see this particular car - what a treat you've given us. I made sure to get a pic of my daughter next to it, this car being 64 years older than she is and all. _________________ 1963 Beetle euro spec "Darrel" (since 2012)

I'd like to think that when Martin leaves our family in the future, someone like Lauren who has been immersed in the VW life since before she was born will be his new owner and will continue to drive and share him with others.
I might have to be buried with my 62. I don't know if anyone could live up to being her new owner. |

I would certainly be willing to give it the 'young college try' Nancy - but only if my other VW OKs the deal, and agrees to move out.
(and because it comes from a "good home" ha ha

I heard Jay Leno say "I am only taking care of it for the next person"
My problem is I don't buy cars, I adopt them. _________________ Bill |

Kelley Park 2017. Had a great time, met several theSamba friends (including Everett!) and saw their cars, took second in the split class.

You have done a incredible work. You've really managed to save a 1949.
Your old build thread really show your work and what you started with.

Today itīs much easier to restore with all new good part.
In 2002 there was not much part to buy. |
