I am in the process of installing a vair engine into a Beetle based buggy. As some of you know the vair runs backwards. One common fix is to flip the diff, but this results in applying load to the coast side of the gears. My question is as follows.
Does the trans from a bus that had reduction boxes run a special transmission or was it a "normal" trans with the diff flipped and running the coast side?
I do not really want to run the coast side and finding the necessary parts to reverse the rotation of the engine is proving difficult. _________________ Licensed Automotive Service Technician

I thought I'd get more replies from the people that drive buses with reduction boxes, as my question deals with a stock transmission. My application is irrelavent to the forum chosen. _________________ Licensed Automotive Service Technician

The crown is flipped and the motion returns forward as it exits the lower axle in the reduction box. The guts are basically the same but running one backward will still give you the same problem wouldn't it? |

It's my understanding that gears are surfaced hardened and there should be no difference in hardness between the load and coast side of a tooth. Now, if you were to do away with the RGBs you would be turning in the correct direction. Good luck with the project. |

the bus trans has the dif flipped. so what would be the coast side in the bug is the drive side in the bus. it doesn't matter that much actually. In fact, it might be better to run the coast side. I know that a lot of trans rebuilders recommend flipping the 3rd and 4th synchro hubs to use the relatively 'fresh' coast side and the new drive side. by that logic, it would be beneficial to spin it backwards and use all the coasts as drives and drives as coasts. Does that make sense? |

eh?
since you are talking air cooled vw and you are certified on everything else in the world you need to dumb down your question to get help. then i can say your answer is "Yes" _________________ Admin note: Bill Passed away - July, 2017

The drive side is the same ramp of the crown teeth whether bus or bug. The pinion rotates the same way. Corvairing it, whether bug or bus, will still load the coast side. The thrust on the crown bearings will be reversed but could still handle it for awhile. It's the cut on the tranny gears' thrust where the action gets spooky. Better to put in the counter-rotation cam and get the reverse distributor drive and starter. |
