hi all , new to samba my FIRST EVER BUS needs help lots pics to come just got the camper mobile and I KNOW NOTHING, but i do love the dubs.

1972 Camper ,
When I got it it would not start and po said "it needed a new clutch, but it had new this and new that", well what ever, it was pretty rough. I towed it home, got it running, not very good. I'm going to pull the motor and do the clutch .

I've stripped the inside and went over the outside, pulled off the bumpers lights mirrors , and wire brushed a lot of rust.

The thing I'm looking for is patch panels, I need rear over the wheel and front floor drivers side and where the gas pedal is . There's more rust, some I'm going to body fill, some I will POR-15, (i just learned about this thru this site, Razz is it any good?). I will prime patch and also paint my nasty black camper top white, any recommendation please post, I will pull the motor, go thru it and replace the clutch, clean underneath and fix any visible damage, undercoat, paint the engine bay and clean and paint motor, please help i need advice what to look for, what to make sure I don't miss and any web sites info parts , local people any help much appreciated. PEACE

whew... Shocked

First, congratulations and welcome aboard.

Second, you need to do these 3 things, in order :

1-Order a Bentley, you will see this repeated over and over, the best reference book for your general maintenance requirements out there.

2-Learn how to use the search function for these forums. You have about 6 different questions in your post, all of which are very common, and you will find lots and lots of information about them through a search of each topic. Once you've done that, and still have questions, pick one topic, use it as your subject title, and post it here, with lots and lots of pictures. You'll get lots of help. Wink

3-Practice using punctuation in your posts, the most knowledgeable members here are old geezers Twisted Evil with little or no patience for young hyperactive bucks, be gentle with them, be clear, be concise...They will serve you well... Laughing

Now, show those pics !!! Very Happy

Try Amazon.com, ebay, classifieds right here, or any good library can also order it for you.

You should also go visit Richard Artwell's site, ratwell.com, he has done an amazing job of compiling a huge list of reference information and tutorials on Bay Window Busses. I credit him for most of the knowledge I have and used to get my bus on the road.

Somewhere on his site is an index for the Bentley book, the lack of which is it's only shortcoming.

Bentley manual can be ordered from any large online bookseller, such as Amazon.com. One advertiser in the Classifieds here says he has one (among others) http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=815492

Also, plan to change every rubber fuel line on your bus. Read the sticky about engine fires.

Good luck to you!

Oh, and pics!

Make sure your image files meet the size and type restrictions.

believe it or not I have the Bentley manual but it only goes to page 70, are there more pages after page 70? It came with the bus, great book, I'm sure it will be invaluable. The po also gave me a spiral bound manual it starts at page 7 and end's at 322 but I have no idea who published it, it has all hand drawn illustrations and hippie lingo throughout, it pretty cool, but the Bentley manual looks great.

I don't know how many pages a Bentley has but it's an inch thick if that helps. The spiral bound one is the idiots guide by Muir, good for a chuckle and basic descriptions of parts and jobs but should never be relied upon for the last word.
Here's the deal on pics: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6
And to save Hazetguy the trouble a Westie is a small puntable dog, a Westie (AKA Westfalia) is a camper sold by VW.

If you mean replacement body panels, Gerson's (KlassicFab) has the best quality, but only a few parts for the baywindows.

You can get most commonly rusted body panels from busdepot.

the good thing about that paint job is that it matches your shop vac.

I love 72's too. nothing wrong with one year only parts, since I believe the 72's sold the most units.

what is that orange spray paint lookin stuff all over? glue? start scrubbing! thats gotta go!
