As a further for what it's worth... it is illegal in Canada to sell/purchase/refill/import halon fire extinguishers so we are pretty much left with Halotron or powdered extinguishers as options for our vans... just 'saying...
Cheers!

I did a bunch of searching here and didn't see anything about this:
http://jogrusa.com/collections/classic-vw-accessories/products/blazecut-fire-suppression-system
It's some kind of pressurized tube that goes in your engine compartment and explodes with the fire's heat. Anyone have any experience with this? There's a video on the Web link that looks interesting. Yeah, it's $225 but measure that against your $10,000 Westy.

That ^^^ is rather amazing!
I love that it's very low-tech & obviously quite effective. _________________ 86 White Wolfsburg Westy Weekender

Interesting.
It is advertised on the Samba...
...and discussed here.
Certainly simple to install and, although spendy, I think much less than a recharge of a traditional fire suppression system. |

http://www.ebay.com/itm/SAFECRAFT-10-LB-FE36-FIRE-...mp;vxp=mtr That's cool but you can't beat 10 LBS. of FE-36, and it's legal in the US and up north.I just don't know if that tube will hold enough FE-36 to do the job! More is better. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=521827 my other link still the best way to go. That is an incredible, easy product. My wife is alone with the van and the kids 90% of the time. That video is incredible. My only question is since the engine cover is right where the problem area is, where do you mount the tube? If you remove the engine cover durring a fire, you would obviously remove the fire suppression system.
Thoughts?

Sort of OT but it is my understanding that you never remove the engine cover if you have a fire. It gives a slam of oxygen and turns a small fire into a huge fire. Shoot your extinguisher through the license place opening and hope for the best.
That said, I'm sure there's somewhere on a V'gon that would work for this. _________________ 1984 Westy with tencentlife power! |

Reviving a million year old thread here gang .. work with me ..
Finished replacing my fuel lines last night ('90 Westy full camper). New protector sleeves. Also new V-C billet fuel rails (..purrrdy). Replaced the plastic firewall fitting with a metal one from Terry (ILO abandoning it altogether-- call me crazy). Also tidied-and-cleaned-up fuel injectors from Witchhunter. Did it all myself, very methodical, real sano. Stoked.
Now it's time to fix in place a fire extinguisher, probably two (three?).
Anyhow, a simple, direct question: is there a bracket/extinguisher available today (April 2018) with an identical fit to the stock, already drilled mounting holes on the pillar behind the passenger seat? A thread search and study was a tad helpful, but given the spanse of time and product evolution I'd like to get an updated response. Yes, I know I can drill the bracket, or the van, or locate elsewhere .. but I remain curious nonetheless.
Gracias, in advance, to anyone who might be able to help solve the puzzle

Don't think there was a stock one. |

Failing that perfect fit in 2018, you might install a chunk of aluminum plate into the original holes, having already attached the 2018 extinguisher's mount to the plate. That way you haven't drilled holes in the van, and the aluminum plate may be an opportunity for you to also mount a flashlight, first aid kit, or hook for the car keys while camping. Bonus round opportunity. _________________ 1987 2WD Wolfsburg Vanagon Weekender "Mango", two fully locked 80 Series LandCruisers. 2017 Subaru Outback boxer. 1990 Audi 90 Quattro 20V with rear locking differential, 1990 burgundy parts Vanagon. 1984 Porsche 944, 1988 Toyota Supra 5 speed targa, 2002 BMW 325iX, 1982 Toyota Sunrader |

My '84 came with a stock (but dead) fire extinguisher. But even if it was charged up I thought it was too small to be very useful so I bought a full-sized one.
When it comes to fire, you can't have too much "fire" power. [/img] _________________ 1984 Westy with tencentlife power! |

As far as I'm aware, all Westfalia Campers equipped with stoves also were fitted with fire extinguishers. All were mounted just inside the sliding door; on Busses until 1979 they were mounted to the front of the bench seat cabinet, on Vanagons/Transporters they were mounted to the rear of the passenger seat pedestal.
In my experience, yes most compact extinguishers include a mounting bracket with adjustable screw holes to easily fit the standard Westfalia attachment points. As you say, I seem to recall perhaps drilling an additional screw hole on one van I owned in order to fit a new bracket. I'm usually a stickler for 'stock,' but exceptions must be when where safety is concerned.
Here's more info on choosing and using a fire extinguisher for your van:

That looks like it has a plastic strap holding it to the wall. In an accident that strap has no chance of stopping the extinguisher from being a large heavy projectile and really hurting someone or worse. The stock straps are usually there to keep an extinguisher from falling off the wall, not secure in an accident. (I hope that is a sturdy black metal strap firmly bolted to the wall, not two little screws). _________________ Dave O

DaveO, that reminds me. I have extra "expired" fire extinguishers at my shop if you want one for your return trip. Still in the green but the fire dept makes me get new ones anyway.
