|
|
Took up a collection with EverettB and Glenn in the Site forum about other applications for air-cooled VW engines besides VWs, kit cars/buggies and trikes. This is the outcome of the discussion.
Thread for VW aircraft engines, compressors, pumps, light tractor engines, inboard boat engines and the like, also VW engine-based generators and VW-power conversions of non-VWs like Fiat, Renault, etc.
Builds, discussions and photos welcome. |

Back in the 1980's a couple of companies sold kits to convert a VW engine into an air compressor - two live fire cylinders and the opposing cylinders for the tank. I can't find anything but someone should come along with pics and/or a scan of the ad. _________________ West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943) |

I don't have any pics but when I was in China they used them as outboard engines with a 10' shaft to a prop. They would steer the small boat by turning the engine. _________________ Fatchicks: Daily drivers, donor cars, collectibles. What can't they do? |

Do the industrial engines come from the factory with deep sumps? |
every engine in that pile (and the ones we didn't get) had deep sumps on them. _________________ thebucket: I invested in hoodride, now DBD won't return my call?

VW powered saw mill originally built by Mobile Dimension Company
Troutdale Oregon
I replaced the restrictive exhaust with a tuned unit
we added a Volvo SU carb and air filter- plus oil filter
cuts like a dream
the last tree we cut was too large to sit on the carrage so we lag bolted the mill to the log. _________________ '57 type 1 Blackberry

A while back someone made mention of a VW engine used to open a draw bridge somewhere in the States. |

I bought a type 2 36hp engine and reduction gear transaxle from our local ski hill they used the combo to haul the skiiers to the top. sorry no pictures of that.
I've always wondered how the VW engines used in aircraft handle the thrust. It seems to me that the prop would try to pull the crank out of the case.
In Glenn's picture it looks like the prop is mounted directly on the crank and not on a reduction gear. _________________ '57 type 1 Blackberry

I don't have an industrial engine, but I was given an industrial engine parts manual.

Some VW motorcycle dragsters. I believe the 2nd bike was the first VW powered vehicle in the 9's. Ran a supercharged 40hp.
