Very cool. I'd love to ride any of them. Very Happy

I'd rather tie myself to a V-2 rocket and orbit the moon.

Either way you'd shatter a hip, ya old fart.

Reach in through that propeller, and turn that distributor, with the engine running.

So---are you suggesting that Russ should take a rocket to the moon? Confused

No, but if he did and didn't make it back in one piece, I could take over moderating the kit car/buggy forum. Very Happy

Does anyone know of any adapters that will bolt on to a VW engine? doesnt have to have a starter.

Or if they still make the PTO for them?

I was at Six Flags in ATL some 15 years ago and there was a VW industrial engine hooked up and waiting as backup for the roller coaster. I was a counselor and preoccupied with kids so I did not get the best look at it. I am not sure if it was being used for generator purposes or to mechanically operate the "whatevers" for the cars. It was painted all red or all blue, I don't remember.

Since your thread is looking for "applications for air-cooled VW engines besides VWs, kit cars/buggies and trikes"

I will throw my VW engines that are not in any of these configurations into the thread. I play with VW powered two wheeled BMW Motorcycles for fun. The first pic's are my bikes that were dealer built kits from the late 1960's and early 1970's.

All my bikes are kick start only VW motors.

I just bought this at a gold mine redundant equipment sale in South Africa. It's a Type 126A industrial engine, 1584cc, single port, 39 horsepower @ 3,000rpm, powering a locally made KSB fire pump through a Getrag PTO. According to the pump plate, built in 1983. I wonder when they built the last Type 1 ACVW industrial engines ...

The Von Roll brand skyway attractions common at parks in the 60's through 80's (Six Flags Atlanta still has one I believe) used a VW engine to power the cable so as to be able to unload guests in the case of power failure or some other problem with the main electric motor.

Here's a not so great photo I found on the web:

You can see the engine behind the left front blue support column. It's right under the cable drive wheel.

I posted this same VW powered sidecar rig here over 3 years ago. Just rebuilt the motor and have been rattling the old bones a bit. In this shot I took a seat in the sidecar so the dog could take a leak. Not to worry! I had the dog properly chained up.
