By request, here are some shots of my custom spare tire mount. It is not too difficult, I did it in a weekend, but that was by trial and error. With these pics you may have enough of a jump start to do it in a day. You could substitute the welding with drilling/bolting. You could possibly do the job with the bumper attached, but in my case it was removed and replaced when completed.
Complete and ready to attach spare.
The construction is very stout and the tire can be firmly torqued down. These are 3/4" self-locking (nylon insert) nuts. No worries about it working loose.
Very simple and practical modification. Makes me feel safer in case of a front end collision with one of the many deer in Montana. Ready to roll!

It looks nicely done. The only problem I can see is have you looked at what your front bumper bolts into? It is basically just sheet metal. You might want to put some reinforcement plates where the bumper bolts to the car.

Yes, I noticed this weak point when I was first installing the bumper (I bought the car without one). I started to make a bracket setup for mounting the bumper directly to the head of the pan, but I ran out of time (was heading out for a long road trip.) I am concerned about hard mounting it, so I've had some ideas rolling around in my head for doing some kind of shock absorbing mount. I figure I can work it out while I'm doing the pan-off restoration, maybe this summer (if I'm lucky.) |
