Made the one I used out of 2x4's, 4x4's, wood screws and some harbor freight castors. |

Long sawhorses with casters - there's not that much weight, but get wheels that work for what you are doing. Good concrete floor can use fairly small, but hard casters - if rolling on gravel, bigger is better. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

IMHO, I think your body dolly design is predicated on whether or not you are going to be doing heater channel replacement. If you are, a design where the body rests on the dolly is no bueno. The best design I have seen by far (and I can't remember the builder now) was a 3-point design. It was built of metal. The two rear wheels where mounted on posts that came directly down from the two body mounts underneath the rear fender area. The front point came down from a "Y" from the two front mounts. Very compact, efficient, strong and allowed for access to all points of the car to include the heater channels. I wish I would have built mine exactly this way and did not. I built one of the wooden monstrosities as you typically see and while I made sure I could access/remove the heater channels, it's still a monstrous PITA.
Here’s mine.

I built one for my ghia, very similar to what is seen here, but I left it open through the middle so the pan can be rolled in and out. I used plywood gussets for additional support since mine doesn't have any cross members at the bottom. I also bought 10" pneumatic wheels for mine…you can get them at the tractor supply sometimes on sale for $5 each…makes rolling it around a lot easier….I can not wait to get my body back on the pan…its been 20 months now! Just waiting on a few rubber body mount pads to come in and it will finally get put back on! |

Mine was originally another foot higher but my painter said it was too high for painting the roof so I cut it down to this...

I need to build a dolly to hold the body off the chassis for a while for my slow father-son 1959 build. I like the designs where the chassis can roll out from underneath.
One quick question on this thread: is it better to have the cross supports under the fender areas (further apart), or closer together under the mid-region? Especially if it might be up on there for a while. Should the cross supports be 4x4 vs 2x4's?
I'm concerned about it denting or bending.
Thanks for any advice before I go buy supplies and start building. _________________ ----------------------------------------
