So I made my goal of getting to Yucca Valley, near 29 Palms without cooling issues, but lost the starter in Ponoma. One whack with a hammer is doing the trick so far. Oh, automatic 1.9 84 westy.
Any thoughts as to whether this will get us through the weekend, or should I start looking for another starter here and now?
I'd rather take my time at home as I'm considering an upgrade and want to research it. For now the focus is on the cool music happening this weekend.
Camper Van Beethoven and Cracker at Pappy and Harriet's in Pioneertown!
Check it out, bring your spare old starter and I'll treat you and your date to the shows! Look for the beige westy by the stables west of the motel.

I've seen pre-12 Volt Beetles with a hole cut in the pan behind the back seat in order to gain access to the starter.............. with hammer laying there. If the starter didn't kick in, it go a whack with the hammer!

Those ole 6 Volt starters were terribly bad to have sticky solonoids!

I've seen 12v fans out of Computers mounted under there to keep the starter cooler! They were wired to the ignition and as soon as the key come on the fan was on!

My experience with hitting starters says it will get you home, but don't get used to it unless you are carrying a spare. Too bad you're an automatic right now. Good luck.

My sticks when the humidity is up. I have been whacking for a year (maybe 20 times total in that time) and all is well! For some reason, I carry around the new starter with me, even though it would take a small army to change it out on my van. Pfffftttt

Mine is a little sticky. Has anyone had much luck cleaning a solenoid to solve this problem?

I believe there may be a 12-step program for people like you.
