here is the first pic of Ursel at the apt
This is the start of my rolling project. I hope you guys will enjoy the lessons I learn as I go, I know will. i have about a year of work and pics to back fill. so here we go.
I pick her up after 2 years of looking for an ACVW. i wanted everything i found but always looked twice and talked about it all the time. to a point i was told by my shipmates i would never get one. Even my wife told me i had until july 7 2010 to find one or she would never be ok with me having one (she was bluffing i think she just wanted me to get started). I drove with a friend to richmond VA on 8 aug 09, I had 3 cars to look at with one listing on craig's list as a back up. I called everyone of the owners that morning to let them know i was driving up (about 70 miles). By the time I got up there none of them where home or they up'd the price (guy with a 73) a grand. so i called the back up in Powhattan. got lost trying to find the place with my friend giving crap the whole way about being cursed never to find a vw i liked. drove up spoke with the man crawled all over the car like the pictures in the muir book. spoke with the guy he had 3 pans, 1 1/2 cars and a ton of parts for 2800 bucks and wanted it all gone. i test drove the car and was sold. i paid 2 grand and got my car a driver's side pan panel, seals for everything, shifters, a couple of boxes of msic stuff and a bathroom mat for a passanger seat cover. Hell yes! its time for the road. i picked up some fuel at the BP My buddy drove my trck loaded with parts and down 295 we went. Full tilt screaming engine at 60mph, and it was getting hot real hot in fact it was too hot.... the damn heaters where wide open w/ the cables disconnected. i stopped to tell my friend and he started laughing its 105 degrees and i'm driving a car with rpm powered heat down the interstate. The funny part is the rain starting up on I64 so i roll up the windows, close the side vents, close the sunroof and the popouts. turn on the wipers and watched them fly off the car its going to be a long drive. but on the way ppl drive up and honk, i get peace signs, thumbs ups and lots of smiles. I'm hot, soaked stripped down to almost my underwear all i can see in my rear view mirror is my buddy laughing so hard at my big dumbass you could only see his mouth. i felt so cool and happy i finally had my bug. after i got home i found out some interesting things. 1. i fried both my rear brakes they where locked up when i started. 2. my ebrake cables are broken. I got lucky and my bug got Her name Ursel (little she bear) (wife picked it out). the pic is from when i got it legal. _________________ The Whingnut

here are some pics from the begining:
engine pic 1600sp with dp heads and generator old kads
Interior style i like to call grandma's bathroom
I did the shift knob to complete the interior
the mat
the painted head liner
cabinet door inserts
according to my Dad that was the "in" thing to do with paneling on bugs in the 70's
passanger side
i washed it!
found out that blue car paint doesn't bond well to brown house paint and put on my Whisenant Enterprises logo. Its a company car now! also installed the trimil gt exhuast my wife bought me for christmas!
alternator upgrade and tune up
my wife painted the pulley with Ursel
I don't have any pics of the brake work. but you can imagine the sounds and words involved. i had to take a dead blow hammer to the drums to get them off as soon as i tapped the drivers drum it poured out rusty bits and what looked like spring remains. it was worse when i removed the drum. sounded like dumping out a bag of broken christmas ornaments. _________________ The Whingnut

after the next underway i found this under my car cover! thanks neighbor i hope your caddy burns! freaking hit and run.
did some more work on the car prior to bug out 68 removed radio put in block off plate, installed new wiper motor and switch 12v and 2 speed (thanks DLwest!), and reworked my seats.
ugly guy pumping gas enroute to bugout68

Here are more pics i took with a 1916 Brownie Model E camera! 10 bucks for the film 12 bucks for the developing and 15 bucks for the broken camera but seeing my car in old school film like this so worth it. i think i'll frame some of these pics.
i wished i knew how to develop my own film. i'm glad they still make the film for it though. what do you guys think? _________________ The Whingnut

Haha, for some reason my mind went to polaroid.
Ya, I laugh at your story, but i wasn't laughing when I got stuck on the side of the road in the rain when my fuel pump went out Saturday. I'm sure I'll laugh one day though. Seems to be the life of a VW owner. _________________ (o\ l /o) '64 Beetle - "Dexter" |

so far i have learnt that some parts are worth keeping around. i keep a spare fuel pump, fan belt, spark plugs, plug wires, cap and rotor, points (incase the electronic stuff burns), bulbs, fuses, cables(if i haven't replaced the old ones yet) and brake hardware in the car (not to mention tools and a floor jack). until i finish the full pan off. then it will be all but a few things kept at the house. keep in mind i also travel all over the place where there is no vw parts places or a many auto parts places open on the weekend. i spend a lot of my off time from the Navy on the road just cruising and taking pictures, picnicing with my wife. _________________ The Whingnut

FYI, if it is a single port with dual port heads... it is a dual port! _________________ flossin, tossin, dippin, and trippin |

well i towed Ursel home to Tenn, along the way the road got to icy and i lost control of the truck, once i started getting the truck to grab road the car slid around the passanger aide and pulled both around facing the other way and pt everything in the median Ursel landed tailpipes first. once we stopped sliding and hit the ditch I pulled forward and back on the road stopped and started checking things out. truck was scuffed up , Ursel was still hooked up front fenders dented (from tow bar), rear passanger tire flat tail pipes packed in with grass, dirt and snow, i didn;t get any pics due to the weather and the retards flying over the hill in icy conditions. the tire only rolled on the bead and lost air i air the tire up with the portable pump/ jump box i keep in the bar and was back on the road, 12 hours later i was home and got some sleep. next morning got up checked car over, cleaned out exhaust system, and cranked Ursel up. All systems good and was able to drive it around. i went to a few places to see what it would cost to fix the rot and metal issues and found AirKooled Kustoms of Hazel green AL is the shop i would like to use. i ended up cruising all over south Tenn and North Alabama while i was home. i hate leaving my car behind But its time for another deployment and the car needs work done i can't do myself for now. the return trip in my truck was worse lost front drivers tire (side wall blow out) in the mountains on I 40 near the NC state line, got the spare out (full sized) and put it on and broke a wheel stud, got down the road and no one was open to sell me a tire (christmas eve 4pm) i limped the truck through NC and got to franklin VA and the spare blew out shredded and put me in another ditch. tow truck driver showed up at 1 am and delivered me to my apt at 2 am. i'm glad i pay extra for roadside assistance. i keep spare tires, patch kits and other precautions but after i used them all Roadside Assistance got me home. now i have a perfectly good VW in Tenn (with all my tools) , and a busted up truck in VA such is life. _________________ The Whingnut

Reading your last post. Damn! I drive those exact roads each week for work. I hate every one of them. I hate being anywhere south and knowing my destination is somewhere east and north of pretlow.
Traffic on those roads is more crazy than ever. Glad you and your car survived. |
