Hey guys, about a month ago I picked up a '69 cal look bug that's been sitting for 25 years or so. Since then I've been tearing it down for paint, stripping the motor, and trying to make some decisions about what I want in the long run. So far it's crazy how different this car is than my '65. Just wanted to post up some pictures and make a build thread so I can ask questions and keep everyone in the loop.
Car is a one owner '69 from Hawaii, taken to Colorado, stored in California. Has one piece windows (doors cut for clearance ), copper hurst shifter, sparco seats, all body trim had been removed, 1776 motor with dual 40 webers, oil cooler, deep sump, Lucas indicators, Empi 8's etc. Thing was pretty cool back in the late 70s' I bet. I'm gonna keep it cal-look for sure just freshen it up.
Sorry I haven't been very good with the pics lately, I'll be more thorough as the build progresses, but here she is when I rolled her into my driveway a month ago:
Here's an interesting contraption I found under the rear seat. One under each seating area, a toggle like switch with some wires running into the dash area, cut so I don't know what they were for?
Ideas? Alarm? Massager haha?
Here she sits today, semi-sanded down, about to go at the bodywork:
I'll post some pics tomorrow of the rust areas and see what everyone says about attacking them.
Here's my idea for a finished product:
My plans so far are disc breaks in the front, adjustable beam, t-bars, simplify the dash and close some holes from un-used knobs, Convert back to vent windows , stock low-back seats, Freshen up the motor with a cam and some gears, header, etc. Pretty much keep it simple, eliminate a bit of the late model stuff I don't want or need, and make it bulletproof.
Thanks for looking I'll post some more up as soon as I can,
Ben

Haha I have no idea what those are for.
Got some more work done today. Decided that I was this far on the tear-down, so why not take the body off the pan so I could address the pan easier.
Here are the places I found rust. Some surface, some deeper. Just wanted to post them up to see what everyone thinks about them.
Have you guys had good luck knocking the paint down like I have then using phosphoric acid then priming and filling the small holes?
Here's where I think the PO cut for the one piece windows, middle of the picture inside the channel?:
I want to shave the antenna hole due to having an aux ipod cord only.
And the two holes under the radio hole since I wont have the air or heat hooked up.
And the vent in the hood to eliminate the rain catcher and all that jazz underneath.
My fenders have some minor salt damage, but are pretty solid. Problem is the bumper holes have been shaved and I want to cut them again. How would I go about finding the measurements to cut the holes for the grommets?
Here's a glimpse of that savanna beige OG Paint that remains untouched:
And a small amount of my parts pile. here's the cleaned block and tranny I just removed (filthy).
Pistons, barrels, and lifters all labeled.
And some stuff fresh out of the solvent tank to take to sandblast.
As always, any and all help is greatly appreciated. Enjoy the pics! |

looks like you've got alot of the same things to patch up as me.
You doing the welding yourself?
The plan looks cool, might be easier to get some replacement parts for the front fenders and doors, not easy to reverse the old cal window's, so I hear anyway.
Keep up the work bro! |

I don't know what I'm going to do as far as the welding. The smaller stuff I might just braze up, but ya I'll probably have a friend tack in the other pieces for me.
Also, I think I'm gonna try and make these fenders work, but the doors I want to find some OG ones with glass and go from there.
Thanks man, I'll check your project out! |
