Sweet. I'm glad you're making progress.
At the rate you keep adding windows, you're going to have a convertible before long! _________________ Ben

I have to take about a month off from this project as I'm moving to a new house. On the plus side I'll have a full workshop to finish this bus in... and hopefully many more.
This will be the 4th move for this bus since I've owned it! _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru

Maybe next time it will move on its own power and you'll be able to move boxes with it! _________________ 1964 Turkis Flipseat |

and we're back.
If you recall, before my life was thrown into upheaval... we left off on the rearmost inner window panel. I had a couple hours today to cut out a donor inner window panel, trim it to size and install the nutplate for the window latch. I actually used one of the threaded triangular bits and flipped it over for the nut plate. I just fabricated some tabs to hold it in place, allowing horizontal movement just like the other ones..
this is the small section I reused to serve as the nutplate:
made some tabs for it:
welded in:
prepping the window on the bus:
Next time I'll get it welded in and start on the rear corner inner window. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru

Some small progress. I got the 4th window inner panel welded in. It took a lot of futzing to get it right. Since I'm merging other panels together to make this work the seams don't line up exactly, so i modified them by adding some thickness on the edges to work... oh and in my last post I put the nutplate and bracket on the wrong side of the window...you guys are supposed to catch those kinds of mistakes!!! I just made another bracket on the other side and moved the nutplate over there.
here it is welded in:
I started test fitting the inner corner window. This will be the last of the window panels! Hopefully it goes in as nice as the one on the other side did.

How are we suppose to know the correct way the 4th window is to open when that window isn't meant to open. |

I never thought of that. I guess I'll have to be careful. I plan to use the shorter version of the latches, hopefully that minimizes the risk.
I got the inner corner window panel fitting and welded in this morning. It didn't go in as nice as the one on the other side. The pressing of these inner corner window panels are pretty lousy but they are workable.
I had to make a few relief cuts to get the inner panel to fit properly. You can see one up top:
Patched up:
The next step is to clean up all we window welds that I've been making. that's going to be a grind....
here's the obligatory shot of the new workshop...still a work in progress:

Way to keep at it when some would have tossed in the towel. Are right and left corner pieces identical or side specific? |

Thanks BarryL, I really appreciate your encouragement!
I'm pretty sure these two inner corner window panels were marked L and R, in Portuguese but I really couldn't tell any difference between them. Considering the amount of work they required , I could have swapped them and not noticed. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru

I mentioned this to a bus buddy of mine the other day and he said "so that means that VW was OK with the window right behind the driver opening that way so something can fly in and shatter the person in the middle seat's skull". that gave me a laugh and I thought I'd include it here.
I'm totally going to geek out here with a lot of pictures. I was inspired by BurlyHammer's thread and I got up early today and worked on the bus. I spent the time adding some deluxe features to the interior.
First off was to cut the hole in the dashboard for the clock accessory. I have some ugly remains of a deluxe clock to use as a template. I found the measurements for the location of the hole in another thread on here. I also picked up a Mercedes clock at a swap meet a while back. Its not the same size but pretty close:
The mercedes clock fits in the hole and will until I trade my firstborn for a deluxe clock.
Next up was the brackets for the rear seat armrests. I'm flying totally blind on this one, using pictures I found here on thesamba as reference. Here's what I'm working off of:
and
(if anyone has the measurement of that arrow it would be much appreciated)
So I started off by salvaging some top hat sections from one of the panels I cut off to put windows in. Its not the same but looks pretty close.
Once I cut them out I started on forming them into the right shape:
It took me a few tries, but the vice and brace method seemed to work best
they are a bit ugly after manipulation but they're the right shape.
I added the tab that wraps around on the bottom and drilled a hole in it like the factory piece looked like (i told you i was geeking out)
making the bracket that the armrest slides into:
cleaned up
welded together
finished piece. I'll straighten it out and make it pretty before I weld it on.
