Theory: Toward the rear so that stuff doesn't fly in and shatter your corner and rear hatch windows. |
I mentioned this to a bus buddy of mine the other day and he said "so that means that VW was OK with the window right behind the driver opening that way so something can fly in and shatter the person in the middle seat's skull". that gave me a laugh and I thought I'd include it here. |
Yes.
Same with the vent wings, I've been hit with some stuff, mostly bees.
I'd be more worried about Safari Windows though. _________________ How to Post Photos

I started working out a sunroof and skylight conversion IF I decide to make it a 23 window bus. I'm still undecided, thats a big chunk of work I'd be undertaking.
I was cutting one of the pieces early this morning and my angle grinder with a cutting disk spinning on it got away from me and took off a chunk of my thumb.... . It was not pretty. I always try to be super careful on everything I do but you can never be too safe. I'm lucky I had my welding gloves on or I might have lost my thumb. be careful out there!

returning from my thumb injury, I spent a few hours this morning cutting and cleaning up the front and rear sections of the sunroof.... mostly de-mossing these rough pieces
thinking out loud, here are the next few tidbits I need to work on:
* Weld in the three armrest brackets
* install nutplates for the rear seat brackets
* weld in the middle seat brackets to the floor (going to do 6)
* make and install the spacer panels that go over the rear window liners
* weld in those hemmed pieces that go on the sides of the rear window hatch. I think I need to make two more for the lower area as well. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru

Interesting. I wonder why they make them that way with the inner corner areas missing. I figured they would mesh with the inner corner window section but I couldn't find it on their site. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru

Hopefully soon. I haven't been able to get out of bed for the past month due to some surgery that didn't go as planned. I am itching to work on the bus. It's getting warmer out and not being able to work on it... or do anything... is getting to me
Ive been buying lots of parts online though...
It's been a good opportunity to ponder the 15 vs 23 question in my head. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru

I got to meet edgood1 last week and see this beast in person. The welding/grinding looks great up close. This project is massive. This bus is going to rock when it’s done. |

Thanks, Dave! it was a pleasure meeting you. I'm not sure if I'm more excited to see your bus finished or mine! Your build is inspiring!
This morning I finished the rear cargo door window opening.
I welded the inner and outer panels together with some bits of the previously hacked panelvan cargo door inner panel still in place.
I trimmed the inner panelvan panel to fit the window opening;
I installed the window to test the fit. Remember, I had to reconstruct the bottom of this window frame. It fits perfect.
I just have to add the nutplate for the window latch and this one is ready to go. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru

That skylight clip sitting on the roof is just to get us all ready, right?
The window fit looks good on the cargo door. Nicely done! |
