Thanks man, its good to be back.
Today's early morning session I continued cleaning up window welds on the interior then moved to the cargo doors.
About an hour of grinding window lips:
I dug out some window latch nutplates from my scrap metal pile:
then proceeded to install one on the rear cargo door I was working on:
test fit the latch and it works great.
I then moved on to door number 2. This one needed the inside window frame to be welded up:
Test fitting the glass:
Installing one of the other nutplates I harvested...after drilling out the broken screws and re-tapping it. I'm doing my best to imitate the factory welds.
test fitting the latch. this one fits just as good.

Burleyhammer graciously sold me this clock. it was too cold to work in the garage today (i need to install heat this summer) so I took this inside to clean it up and maybe get it working.
He also sold me a heater log (in the background) which may end up in the bus. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru

Today's checklist item was the rear seat backrest mounts.
I drilled out some washers so that these M6 nuts would sit flush in them and then welded them together:
Being small I buggered up the threads a little. I chased them with a tap.
Non passenger vans have a blank spot where the nut is supposed to be. This makes locating it easy on the passenger side.
...and there is access to the backside of the location through the gas flap:
The drivers side is neither easy to locate or easy to access the back side. There is some access from the engine bay but its really tucked up there, having the spare tire bucket there makes it impossible to reach from behind.
This proved to be an exercise in extreme patience. First I tried fishing a metal wire through the hole and pulling up the nutplate. After several attempts, including losing it behind the gas tank and having to pull out the gas tank, I ended up welding metal wire to the side of the washer/nutplate and pulling that through one of the side holes. That let me hold it in place so I could thread in the screw and tighten it.
then i welded it in:
and grinding it down:
next checklist item is to finish welding in the middle seat mounts. I might need to find my middle seat to locate the middle mounts.

this was something that had been bugging me and now its checked off the list. when I got the bus it had the 1500 air cleaner and someone had hacked in brackets to make it work on the left side. i took it off and it left some holes . Today i fabricated a bracket from some pictures on this site and welded it in.
though now i think i installed it a little too far rearward than the factory did. i might be ok with that as I know it works. this is where it was when it was working. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru

I welded in brackets for a 3/4 seat. i figured I would put them in the bus now, without having a seat and make the seat fit rather than wait for a seat to fit the brackets. I'm now ready for either a full or 3/4 seat.

What are the 3 holes in the spare tire well for? |
I don't know. they were there when i got the bus. I actually dug up a photo of the engine from when I first got it and the holes are visible. The oil cooler adapter is an interesting idea. I figured the original longblock was replaced with a bigger GEX rebuild that was in the bus when I got it. It might have more history than I guessed.

I installed the drivers side hem piece that I made a while back. It went in nice. I have the other side to do next and then I have to make two more for the areas below.
Here it is "hemmed" in.
side profile. its nice and tight
painted to prevent it from rusting
other side is next. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru

3:30? I need to up my game. I sometimes wake up that early, but only think about working on my bus. I thought about putting a coffee pot out there to increase productivity and reduce down time. Haha
The VVA dust off is on May 5th in Kittery, ME. Are you going to go? |

I wish I could work at your pace. I'll start drinking coffee if thats what it takes!
I'm thinking of shifting my sleep schedule to work on the bus at nights so I can listen to the Red Sox games. As for the bruins, well... the NHL playoffs kill my bus productivity altogether.
I was hoping to go to the dust off but I can't make it, I have a weekend full of graduation parties to attend. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru

got the other side done today. The top pulled out a few spot welds when I was "hemming" it with a hammer. gotta go back and fix that.
There are so many little details that make a bus a deluxe... Here's whats on the immediate horizon:
Bottom headliner hemmed pieces
middle seat armrest bracket
heater log???
headliner claw pieces around roof and air vent box
small filler panels under rear windows.
what else am I missing? _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru

I made the middle seat armrest bracket and welded it in this morning:
also welded in the last of the floor plates. this is the one for the middle leg of a short middle seat
I have yet another hem piece to weld in. I was looking at this section of deluxe cargo door that I used and there's a hem piece for the headliner to tuck under between the cargo doors. I'll have to harvest this one or make one:
