Comparatively, every time I turn on my wipers, they sweep across the glass. They then return to their original position. This is repeated over and over until I turn the switch off. _________________ First Trip in the RustyBus:

Same thing happens with my '78. The wipers always blow the fuse in the same spot too (position on windshield, I mean). Apparently it is just the motor getting old and needing more current to power it. That was the explanation my dad gave me anyway.
If I put in a higher resistance fuse will it work and/or will it have any side effects on the rest of the electrical system? _________________ 1978 Transporter, 2.0L FI |

Come on Max. You have been here long enough not to do something like that.
What do you think the problem is? |

My wipers did work fine until a few weeks ago. Maybe I will try a bigger fuse and see what happens. I did notice that the fuse will not blow until I start the engine.dave 1973 bus |

why not just replace the fuse with a piece of 4 gauge wire. that should fix it right up. _________________ thebucket: I invested in hoodride, now DBD won't return my call?

why even consider using a heavier fuse than called for in the manual? Just pour gasoline on it and toss in a match.
Check the voltages up front to see if you are still getting 12V to the wiper motor. If you are then replace the motor. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin

Stopping or slowing at the same place on the glass means bent linkage under the dash or the wiper shafts are sticking in the bearings where they pass out thru the body. I'm sure if there's enough resistance to keep them from moving, it could certainly blow the fuse.
Mine were slowing and finally stopped, but I shut them off before the fuse blew. I suggest you check voltage like SG said, and if that's good, pull the wiper arms and clean and lube both shafts.
Been there, done that.

According to the Bentley- you should get one if you dont.
The Windshield wiper fuse is #10 counting from left to right and should be an 8 amp fuse. _________________ '72 Panel ~ B-Bus

Why would you think there is a problem with the motor? It's probably the mechanism that is messed up. Links, pivots, bearings, etc. There is a reason that wiper shaft assemblies are a common stocked item with parts suppliers. I had to go thru the whole mechanism when restoring my bug. The shaft assemblies were bad. A good way to burn up the motor. _________________ 71 Superbug

Pull the wiper assembly and disconnect the shafts from the motor and try to move the linkages by hand. They should glide through their range. If not you have to rebuild the transmissions or clean and lube them. They need to move freely. I have done many on the Rabbits and Jettas. _________________ Brett

I just took the whole dang assembly out per the Bentley, took the shafts apart and re-greased them, lubed up the pivot points, even took the motor apart and cleaned and oiled. Wipers work great! Cost me nothing but time. _________________ 1977 Westy, Automatic. Big Valve heads, CS Cam. |

I had the same problem(fuse blowing). One of the wiper shafts was seized. Removed it, cleaned it, greased it, installed it, no more fuse blowing. |
