I found a locking steering colum in the remains of a chopped up bug. It has german writing on it. Something like GARAGE, FAHRT, And HALT. What kind of beetle came with this and is it worth anything? I can get it cheap and the old guy has the key. Thanks Andrew M Oh yeah, it also has the radio delete plate???

I have the very same thing on my 65 bug. The original owner picked up the bug in Germany, drove it around Europe on vacation, then shipped it home. I was told the lock was an option, maybe only something available in Europe. I don't know if this is true or not!

In Germany theft was much worst than here ,,, " back then " it was common to see locks on the steering, shifter, glove box, hood pull ,, sun roof and engine.

If you get this ,, get the steering shaft also, That has a oval shaped hole in it for the lock.

the car I had with all this was 1947 and that was in germany..

The column tube and internal shaft are different for the locking type. Try to get it all or you will have to cut and weld parts (and you might not get it to work right if you are off a little bit).

Does anyone know how to remove this thing?
I want to repair mine and get a key made, but the mounting screws don't have any head. I really would rather not drill them out to remove it.

The screws HAD a head; it was twisted off as part of normal installation, for anti-theft reasons. You might be able to go at them from on top, but likely you have to drill them out.

I've got some reverse-rotation drill bits that I've used on that sort of thing before. You have to have a steady hand but often times after you've drilled into it a while, the vibration and the drill bit applying reverse torque and catching in the hole it is drilling will pop the fastener loose and unscrew it. If it doesn't you just drill the old head out and pop it off.

X2- but spray those bolts with PBnJ well in advance- I finally had to resort to utter bug destruction removing one from a wrecking yard once...

Wolfsburg West sells the "sheer bolts" so you can return it back to a "factory" installation.

And let me tell you- that is something you don't want snapping off prematurely- make sure the column is mighty snug whilst snugging the new shear bolts...
