I know this is an older post but I have been looking up this subject and it seems there isnt a lot of info on this modification. I am going to run 17 x 7.5 on all four corners and I have been fabricating for 20 yrs shouldn't be to bad of a job. It looks like you cut it in the middle, did you install a sleeve? I was told there are spot welds on the end that can be drilled out and remove the end, cut down the tube and reweld with spot welds. True or false?

Has anyone looked into this?

http://www.aircooled.net/new-bin/viewproductdetail.php?keyword2=DRS0007&cartid=0122200769263884

This is what I was researching to do for my 56.

Also, VWZACH, have you gone through this yet? I found several companies that will widen your stock wheels to taste, for instance:

Is it fair to say that if I reduce the width of the torsion housing on one side by 3" that the axle would need to be 3" shorter as well or am I best to do the modification and use my old axles to figure out a length? Is there a chart someplace that relates axle length to torsion length?

The axles in an autostick Beetle are the same as those in a 4 speed. You are thinking about the axles in a full automatic Type 3. The left one is 26mm shorter than a Beetle axle. But that's no help to you. For a 3" chop, you need custom axles from SAW.

I'm building a fiberglass buggy and I want to narrow the rear so my tires don't stick a mile out the sides. If I narrow it 3" each side what axles do I use. Somewhere I read that you have to us the axles out of a semi-auto bug... one side shorter than the other or something?? Can someone tell me what axles I should use. I have a 74' IRS pan.

Yes it has been welded closer to the trailing arm pivot because there is 4.75 inches out of each side, 9.5 inches total. the bottom mount lines up with the upper shock. When you remove this much out of each side things ARE going to look closer!
I've got shocks in it with the body on, and the shocks don't have any problem moving.

It looks to my eye that the lower shock mount was welded on too far towards the inner pivot of the TA. It looks like the shock will be at quite an angle instead of straight up and down. Have you test fitted a shock?

8 or 8.5 by 15 centerline convo pro with mickey thompson street slicks 10.5 x 15. he was fast67bug on samba try search as i think there are pictures on here some place or i can email them to a email address. it has 1" between adj spring plates and 1.5 between stock fender lip. so yes the 10.5 x 15 tires fit inside stock 67 rear fenders.

What size rims did he use on the back? And how did he go about modding the rear suspension, I assume new 3in axels abut what about the tubes and spring plates?

oooollllldddddd topic, but I am looking for some info as well? Any ideas?

I have seenn some centerline rims that were 15x10, is that too wide? obviously I need to narrow the axles and mod the arms, I have a '65, so it is the older suspension type.

Any ideas?
