I'll give you heaps of credit and admiration on this build, but it's well known that the transaxle is the syncro weak point and high-output engines have proven their demise time and time again. No matter how much you build up the transaxle, it still tops out at what, 150 ft. lb. torque max to use and maintain reliability? Whats the EE20, 250 ft. lb.? Not to mention slugging it through some pretty hard terrain. You can't really fault AA on this one.

Doesn't matter what engines installed apparently, I've talked to four people recently all with different engines and all with LOW mileage trans issues.

Guess what shop is the common denominator

I'm sad that Matt offered me a deal this morning to help me out after 30mn on the phome @ $2 /mn . And later on in the day her wife send me a email and tells me that this is not possible le anymore.

Just disappointed about the roller coaster.

Ah, I get what you're saying, and that would be frustrating. I don't know what cost on one is, but one would hope they would send it out for that and the cost of shipping. What is a little time and effort invested vs. keeping a high profile rig on the trail. I hope it gets sorted out for you.

Greg just make ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN YOUR SHIPPING FORMATION IS PERFECT FOR THE PART SHIPPING INTO BUENOS ARIES. THE CUSTOMS OFFICE THERE AT THE AIRPORT IS TERRIBLE in more ways than one. Ask the locals about it.

(from personal experience - there is $5600.00 of electronics sitting there on a shelf somewhere I couldn't get through customs or ship back to vendor.)

From talking to motorcycle guys who have tried to get parts I would want that shaft coming on an airplane, in a private parties luggage. No way I would trust shipping, not on something that delicate and spendy.

$yncro love.

What is this part?? Doesn't look lik the mainshaft to me, but rather the input shaft.

Wouldn't the input shaft have a threaded hole in the shown end?

Agreed, that looks like a snapped off input shaft still screwed to the end of the mainshaft. Of course VW calls the input shaft a mainshaft so that could cause some confusion. A snapped input shaft is a $50-100 part, not $1000. The true mainshaft is expensive these days.

If it was simply a snapped input shaft that part could have been replaced without disassembling the tranny.

There are some special versions of the input shaft made to twist and spring back under severe loading. Perhaps one of those is called for.

edit:After another look it might be the whole input shaft with the snapped end of the mainshaft rather than the other way around. That makes more sense considering the parties involved.

Greg and Katie, sorry you are broken down, that is a lot of torque for ANY transmission, let alone a Syncro.
Sorry there was back and forth on the shaft price but glad you are keeping spirits up.
DO NOT SHIP THAT SHAFT. I give it 1:100 odds of getting to you unless you have someone personally deliver it. THe good news is I am free next week if you need my help. Wink

Take it low and slow home.

Mark, you amaze me once again with the fountain of Vanagon information you possess.

If you ever decide to write a book for the rest of us idiots I'll buy 3 copies.

That would be another twist to the roller-coaster.

Any further info/source/link? I'd be interested.

I edited my post above right after I wrote it. It looks more like the end of the mainshaft snapped off and is still attached to the input shaft by the small threaded stud.

I've seen the torsional input shaft listed various places. Here is one for the shorter shaft Vanagon applications, VW inline 4 diesel and gas.

Mark

Our Weddle Racing input shafts are much more effective at dampening shock loads than the stock VW input shafts, and they work to significantly reduce stresses in the transmission and drivetrain. This can make a huge difference in the longevity of components, especially in high performance applications. Each shaft is manufactured from custom-spec ultra high quality 300M steel, through-hardened, and shot peened to maximize strength and fatigue resistance.

091-311-105AHD
WEDDLE RACING TORSIONAL 300M INPUT SHAFT FOR VW TYPE 2, SHORT SNOUT (287MM OVERALL LENGTH)

This is a short snout input shaft. For use with Type 1 air-cooled and inline 4 cylinder engines (including diesel). Also works with most engine adapter plate packages. Will work with Type 4 engine if pilot bearing is installed in flywheel instead of crank.
Applications:

'68-'79 VW Type 2, '80-'83 Vanagon (Air Cooled), '84+ Vanagon (Water Cooled)

I would abandon "stock" parts for this application.

Many I have talked too about this are surprised it went as far as it did.

I hope MReuter sees this.

I spoke to Greg, he's getting a mainshaft from Weddle, it's cheaper.

I made him a list of things he will need too, clips, pinion bearing nut etc...

I made a how-to on the french forum he can look at,but it seems he's gonna look for a shop to do it. I'd keep an eye on them and do most of it myself...

Hey brah, fly me over, I'll fix it up and bring the tools and parts Razz
