This is a great thread. I thought the earlier images of the approach to the roof conversion might stimulate some discussion. But, since it hasn't, I will ask...
I realize there are a number of methods that are used for the roof conversion, this one seems to be the simplest and easiest way to preserve the flat Westy bed base. Why is this not for everyone?

Alika, I was busy last week end trying to sell a van to a photographer that did not know what was a phillips screw driver ... I ended up telling him that the 84 Suby Westy was not for him end then I had some friend from NM for two days, we had to go Hokytong
I did not start the machining yet. The picture that are shown are not mine. I will start the nose cone pretty soon though! why do you ask that? do you plan to buy the same one ?
Ron, Thanks!
I'm use to replace planels on vans as I worked in a restoration shop, I could have done the formel way but It is just so much more work for the same result, maybe better because I have a sandwich of two layer of metal Vs single layer for factory.. (let's see how my roof will look once painted.. unless I tell people, they will never see it . I don't know why the roof section they used to convert was round shaped! It's kinda weird but it's was maybe simpler and involved less modification at the time.

I did have a little bit of time tonight to work on the front bumper.
I bended the second tube, mounted them both clamped and welded provisory plates until I get some smaller tubing to join them. I will get some 1.5 in OD tomorrow to do that.
It almost look like I don't need the elbows on the side I have to think about it... By the way a little pic of my wheels/tire setup : 225/70/16 tires on passat alloy rims.

After thinking a long time about my bumpers I ended up with a design that at first can look weird but, while other people use bumpers only for protection and look, Mine is going to be useful too!
My plan is to integrate some features like this cylinders so I can then fabricate racks that will slide into this cylinder. bike or moped front rack.
Fishing pole holder, attach ropes , whatever will be possible...

Great Idea!
I though about something similar for the back, like they use for hooking stuff on the towing square hole on the rear. |

Really looking forward to watching this project! Good for you for going for what YOU want.
Any idea if some or all of the existing bellhousing / mount bits will work? Clutch / flywheel options? _________________ Gone but not forgotten - 1991 Carat - AAZ transmogriffied to mTDi.

No idea yet about the bellhousing! What I know is Subaru kept designing the same patern for 20+ years and I doubt they changed the design. I will see and build my own if it's needed . For the clutch and flywheel it's too early to talk about it.

That is SO COOL... thanks for sharing. This is something I'm very interested in. Are you comfortable telling us approximately how much the engine cost?
BTW: Very nice work on the rust repair and welding. That's going to be one sweet van when you're done with it!

Ya, kinda early. IF you start thinking about your flywheel, be sure to use a diesel specific flywheel even if it screws up things like the easiest clutch or bellhousing option. Anything less than the stock mass which i'm sure is about 20-25lbs & it'll idle rough. I guess that sounds obvious but... I sure hope Subi isn't doing the dual mass FW thing. _________________ Gone but not forgotten - 1991 Carat - AAZ transmogriffied to mTDi.

Thanks everybody!! I like positive
While I'm wainting for my engine I have to keep me busy...
I cutted with the cnc machine each end of my bumper so they fit perfectly then permanently welded each side. I ordered elbow to do the upper part of the bull bar and caps for the sides. I used an other roof rack that was messed up to extand mine.
Also, because I like to do two things in the same time to don't have to wait to much when I order parts, I started to modify the front overhead roof rack such a way that a spare tire will fit and also will match the Fiamma extended awning 11'8" on the side .
Because the roof is conical shaped I had to do some longitudinal cut and use the flex of the fiberglass to make matching surfaces. I thinks It's gonna look ok. I picked up this modification from a Canadian friend that did it.

Interesting thread, interesting image.
The engine to harness main connector as the same shape as most subi engine:
I wish you good luck with the FI management system, i'm still struggling with the atmospheric 2.5L FI. Good thing that you have the key/IGN/box. Count your hours and $$$ invested in that project, i'm very curious.
Have fun! I mean it in a good way. I lost the fun part of my job/engine conversion a wile ago.
