(stolen from GA bug)

This is the at least the third original paint 64 beetle that I have seen(I owned one) that has what appears to be body colored inspection plate covers from the factory rather than black
Anybody else seen this or have pics? The vw experts claim they all should be black

Take it off, is there a paint "ring" around it that indicates the area was repainted with the cover on? The tire wells rust badly and it is entirely possible a previous owner cleaned it up with a can of touch up paint. He just carefully masked along the crease and didn't paint the paint code sticker??

The bumpers being painted scream repair job. I know we aren't talking about them but the factor into your answer.

Just guessing here.

If they painted the entire spare tire well, they masked off the original color label and the production plate Smile . Mine are black on my 64 also.

But no one has concrete evidence? Only speculation. Confused
And the covers are on both sides of the body line HHHMM

I don't think it's been re-sprayed. Most likely someone just painted the covers. The fact that the plate and the paper color code sticker are untouched to me would suggest that it hasn't been painted over. People aren't that tedious when painting unfortunately.

Yes but it has been proven you can not go by the owners manual for answers Wink
This is why I am curious. I had an early ruby red 64 that was OG paint and had body colored covers.
I am interested in documentation, not that "I have never seen one"

All you have to do is read the forums Wink Pics put in the manuals don't necessarily go with the vehicle.

Back in the day when these cars were still new and being sold, any part on it was available from VW as a replacement unit. VW dealers also had some killer body shops that would do wonderful work.

Maybe, just Maybe this car took a hard shot to the nose many years ago and was repaired by one of these good shops that took the time and put on a new color sticker as well as properly remounting the ID plate. The only screw up they did was to paint the covers the color of the car.

Just another guess.

Thanks but not wanting guesses. Wink I have been doing that for years. It has come up again for me with a couple of 64's here with recently posted pictures of what appears to be OG paint under the hood of these cars with the paint code sticker there and untouched. The owners have said they will take more oics so maybe we can get to the end of this.
Anybody else have a 64 with body color covers?
