Full disclosure; I am not the owner of this Ghia. It belongs to my boss, whom I've worked for 19 years now. He is semi-retired, spending over half his time in Mesa, AZ. He is starting to sell off some of his Kansas City assets and has tasked me with selling two of his cars for him. (he is in the 3rd pic below, in the top left corner)
I have previous experience in the auto industry and carry a passion for cars, so I've taken a lot of enjoyment in detailing / lightly restoring this pretty car. I grew up with a 1963 Triumph Spitfire in the garage; and while the two cars are very different, there are many similarities with both being sporty, European convertibles.
Here are a few "before" photos, I took these about two years ago in our warehouse. The last photo with the Camry was taken a month ago.

Auckland on a winter's day: Sunshine on my Ghia, clouds above, a rainbow in the background, and lots of yachts moored in the Tamaki River estuary.

That’s a nice photo really highlighting details many of us can learn from such as door gap and lower rocker finish. _________________ 1958 coupe |

Lovely, peaceful Karmann Ghia photo indeed!
That's at least the 2nd photo of your Ghia you've posted that features a rainbow ending just above it as I recall, and again I'd like to point out that it must be proof that a Karmann Ghia is a treasure every bit as valuable as a pot of gold.
... or is that just your subtle way of reminding us that it will cost us a pot of gold to make our tired old Ghias look like that?
Anyway, as usual Thanks for sharing. |

I was taking my Ghia out for a drive to ensure that the battery doesn't go flat, and perchance there was this rainbow. We're in an Auckland winter and the changes in the waether are rapid and severe. Heavy, heavy rain and flooding last week - people in boats in the streets! - pure sunshine this week and a mixture of the two when I took the photo. Still, as Crocteau said, a very peaceful place (except maybe for the weather and the volcanic action).
As for the "pot of gold" - I'm following several builds here and that's where the really classy acts are happening. The attention to detail is just astonishing and reminds me of my car's blemishes. It looks good from far, but far from good close-up. The struggle continues. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

I love the look of ^^^ that ^^^ color - what is the color's name, and is it a (presumably newer) Volkswagen color? |

The most Ghias we've had in one place in New Zealand for quite a while - at the VW Jamboree in Auckland on 15 October 2017.
Typical Auckland weather - rain, sunshine, wind, sometimes all three at the same time.

My girlfriend and I are "new" VW owners. My first car as a kid was actually a '70 Beetle, but I haven't been behind the wheel of a VW since. She has always wanted a Karmann Ghia ever seeing the movie "Pretty in Pink" when it came out.
This week she made her dream come true with a '69 coupe, while I wait on a '79 bus that I am getting. She wanted something that looked nice, drove well, but still left plenty of room for her to put her own stamp on it. She surprised me and took a chance, buying this one online and out of state.
Needs a few things before we can get it inspected (like windshield wipers would help), but it has been delivered in the condition promised and she is thrilled.
We are both looking forward to the restoration process of both vehicles...she just gets a head start on me.

Congrats, that interior looks pretty original!
Are the seams under the door and torsion covers filled? More pics. |
Had to look up the "torsion covers". If there was ever a hole there for a cover to fit over, I can't find one. I'm assuming you mean here.

We've both been working since it was delivered yesterday, I won't really have time to look at in depth until Sunday. The interior is mostly original as far as I can tell. It is amazing how much it smells like my bug did on the inside. It's been 30 years since I owned that car, but I remember that scent and it the same as the Ghia.
By the way, I'm 6'4". Getting in and out of it has been an adventure, lol. But until I teach her how to drive a stick, she gets the roomier passenger side.
She'll learn, though, and love driving it. She already loves riding in it.[img][/img] |
