I recently bought a 67 Ghia from someone I know in western Colorado. This was a daily driver in Montrose, Colorado until some years back, and it had been sitting outside quite a while when I bought it. I brought it home to Denver and now I am stripping it down to the body only, and the plan is to take the body off the pan and meida blast it, fair it out, and paint it. It started out green and someone changed it to this reddish at some point. I'm not sure what color we will pick for it. Maybe green with a white top, maybe something entirely different. The third picture below was taken yesterday. I have the seats out, the doors emptied of their contents, and almost all the (original) carpet out. The interior was all original as far as I can tell. All the insulation is still there. The pan is rusted on both sides so it will need those replaced.

Nice
67 is my favorite year. I own one so I guess I'm partial.
What are your plans? are you going to try and keep the stock look or some sort of custom?
As you may already know 67 has many one year only items like the seats.
Congrats! _________________ "Depression is a malfunction of the instrument we use to determine reality.”

Hi, thank you for your kind words. I have had many buses and campers (splits and now a bay) and a bug or two back in the day but I have never had a Ghia before. I bought a 69 from someone in CA but once it got here I felt it wasn't a good enough starting point and needed too much for my interest. I put it in storage and then bought this Ghia from a friend - same guy I bought my current 73 camper from. This car has minimal rust - both the driver and passenger side front sections of the pan need to be replaced, but that's about it. It sat for a long time so all the rubber is toast, but all the glass is there. The chrome is pretty good, although I slightly bent the piece at the bottom of the driver's side quarter window getting it off. They're on with nails! I have restored a ton of Mercedes and numerous vw's but this is the first car I have seen where so many nails were used!
My plans for this car are to get the body stripped of everything, get it off the pan, and send it to the media blaster. Then to a body shop (I have one in mind that is expensive, but good, and another I have heard is reasonable and still pretty good) and have all the body work done and then painted single stage, probably two-tone, but haven't picked color(s) yet. Meanwhile, I need to find someone who knows how to weld to do the pan work and anything else we might find, and then I want to re-build the car back into as stock a car as I can do, and I'll even use what parts I took off it where and if I can. I adhere to the philosophy that it's only stock once and original never goes out of style.
As for 67, I think it was one of Volkswagen's best years. I had two 67 Westfalias, the second of which I swore I would never sell - until I needed money for my wife's ring! - but did in 1995 - for what now is a song, of course. But I loved that it was the first year of 12 volt from the factory but everything else was still really old school pure vw. I don't know anything about 67 Ghias and would love to learn.
I hope this isn't too much of a ramble but... I do need any and all advice I can get because I know absolutely nothing about Ghias except that I have always thought they were extremely beautiful. My friends had convertibles back in the day but I was always focused on buses. So any guidance, suggestions, etc. etc is very welcome.
Oh, and I have a ton of questions.
Thanks!

Ok, I will do that. I didn't take as many "before" pictures as I wish I had, but I have some and have been taking them as I strip the interior out. I'll try to start a build thread tomorrow. |

Hi! First post here, and I'm a Ghia newbie. I had no intention of buying a Karmann Ghia, or any car for that matter. But like that puppy that follows you home, here it is. This was an impulse purchase 100%. However, the car runs like a top, starts when cold on the first try, and is FUN. It's also the very strange Autostick, which seems to work perfectly. Needs some upholstery and a new dash, and I probably paid too much (13.5K), but I don't care. This is my new 1970 Ghia coupe in Pampas Yellow:

Hello,
after urging a good friend of mine almost 15 years to sell me his Ghia, he finally did it in 2018. I had a couple of old VWs before, like the 53 Oval Beetle on the pictures, but a Karmann Ghia is my all time favorite. I few rust issues on the front had to be fixed, and as usual, it was much worse than expected But now it's fixed and all fine, so time to enjoy the car.
Some of my friends also own an aircooled VW or Porsche. So when we all together go for a spin we have quite a big range of different aircooled cars, like VW 181, Porsche 911 E, Porsche 356 SC, Beetle Convertible, an Early Bay and my Ghia.
I've been reading on thesamba since 2006 I think, and I got a lot of information from the forum. So thanks to you all for supporting me and all the readers out there.

Two great examples added to the group! Thanks for sharing.
Capslock, good purchase, and actually surprised you got your Ghia for that price in California, we've all seen them go for higher prices in worse condition, so I would say you scored!!
Prof Burgess, what year is your Ghia. Looks awesome, especially being a convertible which I am partial to of course.

I picked up this 1966 KG from my uncle 4 months ago. Its been sitting for 22 years and was in a flood about 8 years ago. Body is completely rust free; however the interior, engine, and transmission were ruined by the water. In the four months ive been working on my new project ive torn the car down without having the body off the frame (space restraints). As im nearing finishing new brake lines, fuel line, throttle and clutch cables, and shift linkage i have many questions involving my next steps...the transmission and rear axles. My 1966 came with the original 1300cc mated to a non original 4speed manual. The only reason i believe this is non original is because of the 12v starter however the car does have short type axles. Im new to classic VW and if anyone has any information on where to order rebuilt VW transmissions and engines i would greatly appreciate it! Also, what type of transmission should i put in this 66 if i want to keep the wide 5 pattern and 12v?

My ‘63. I bought in 2018. I got the birth certificate and found it was originally L398 Pacific blue, so I think I’m going back there but maybe with a white roof. I’ll also lose the EMPIs and go back to steelies
The interior is modified by the PO. Type 34 seats and the dash is smoothed off with some nice dial modifications. He went for the “industrial look” with the carpet and exposed metalwork which I like, but think I’ll cover up soon. I do want to return it closer to original.

That looks fantastic. Consider me inspired John, thanks. I am also impressed that Diane has colour coordination going on with her shirt. It’s all in the details! _________________ 1969 Beetle Cabriolet
